Pretty sure I got a hand written letter from more than just OM when I was applying for undergrad. I had a "personal" tour guide at AU. My UF law acceptance letter came with a hand written note too. Mostly illegible though.

Can you imagine how pissed a recruit would be if he knew that letter was actually from a dude?

This happens at most schools. I was a roadrunner at State in the 90's and we wrote 12 per week. There was 60 of us. Any student who had his act/sat scores sent to MSU, visited on kind of visit day or had any body send us there info got on that mailing list. We also called 2 hours monthly. So yes, this is very common!
