US Army to End Sponsorship of High School All-American Game

quote:

The U.S. Army will cease its sponsorship of the high school All-American game that bears its name after the 2018 event, John Ourand of SportsBusiness Journal reported Wednesday.

Mark Davis, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for marketing, released a statement on the decision, per the Army Times' Meghann Myers:

The decision was difficult, but necessary to guarantee we remain the best stewards of the resources we are provided to ensure that America continues to value, support and consider joining the Army team.

The Army continuously assesses the effectiveness of its marketing programs, and will continue to fund those that are high performers, cost effective, connect America with their Army and directly support Army recruiting.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl annually showcases some of the best high school football players in the country.

A number of All-American Bowl alumni have gone on to star in the college and pro ranks. According to the Army's official website, the event has produced nine Rookie of the Year award winners, 77 first-round picks and 143 first-team collegiate All-Americans.

Insert Navy, Air Force, or Nike.

Honestly, I'd prefer they just make it another version of The Opening at Nike HQ. The "game" as it is is a clusterfrick of bad timing and varying skill levels. At least the 7 on 7s feel like there's ana ctual competition going on with a level playing field

I never understood why Nike didn't have an All American game already. It would be the goat and all the top players would probably hold out to play in it

It is a waste of resources and has been for some time.

USAREC would be extremely hard pressed to show the impact in terms of number of contracts resulting from the game vs. dollars spent.

Is there an indoor stadium up there to host the game? It's fricking cold in Oregon in January.

I liked the Army Game being in San Antonio. It filled up the stadium with more than family and friends because military members got in for free.

With Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, Kelly AFB, Randolph AFB and Brooks City AFB all within 40 miles that helped get people in the stands.

It still surprises me that kids play in this. What's the upside? Not a single one of the invitees need the exposure to get offers. After the Jaylon Smith reaction by college players avoiding bowl games to spare themselves for the next level, how soon before high schoolers do the same?

Not to mention Cadet Command. Not a good use of resources.
