I personally have no love for the guy as a coach but you can't ignore the results he is putting together in recruiting. Will be interesting to follow over the next few years. Congrats thus far state fans.

He's always been a great recruiter, but what got him in trouble at UCLA was managing the talent (specifically the egos). I think at State he'll have a better balance of middle of the road kids and higher end talent that he won't have the management issues he had at the end of his tenure at UCLA.

He's definitely a stud recruiter and can locate talent. As much of a bad arse Westbrook is now, Howland was the only major school to offer him. He may not have gotten the best out of him while he was at UCLA, but there's no doubt he can find and get talent. Miss St. is set with him at coach.

Definitely got lucky that Tennessee and Missouri passed on him. We would not have signed a coach of his caliber otherwise.

I think the one and done guys, after the new rule, are what got him in trouble at UCLA. Maybe a blessing in disguise that he won't have to worry about them as often at State.

I'm not sure there was one available, afterward.

Perfect fit for both us and him.

Looking forward to this season and the future of Mississippi State basketball.

Bingo.

Who could handle players that are already basically celebrities in LA who are only going to school for a year and then will become millionaires.

Miss St with 4 top 100 commits & UT taking a commit today from a kid over Charlotte & last guy they are targeting is deciding between UT, Yale & Princeton...if Barnes can't recruit high end talent the value of his hire is basically nil.

Perhaps this is too much of a homer view...but I think Barnes is just riding it out to retirement. Not to say that he will be bad.

Howland is hungry and wants to prove some people wrong after getting run out of his dream job.

I had no idea that Westbrook wasn't a highly regarded recruit. 3 star with offers from Arizona State and Boston College. Wow

Yeah he was really doing a bang up job.

3 NBA players + Jeronne Maymon, Antonio Barton, Armani Moore and Darius Thompson and he finally made the play in game in year 3.

3 NBA players weren't enough for him to win more than a single NIT game in his first 2 years.

He's recruiting at a very, very similar level to Cuonzo outside of Stokes who fell in to his lap and Hubbs who he didn't get until year 3.

Armani Moore, Josh Richardson, Quinton Chievous, AJ Davis, Darius Thompson, Derek Reese, etc. would fit right in with this class would they not?

Y'all did a bang up job hiring Donnie Tyndall too.

But Martin isn't a good recruiter right?

It's not Martin's fault that no one there wanted him and didn't give him any advantages in recruiting. I've read the stories about him getting denied usage on the team plane. Don't forget those players you discussed knew it was coming because of how Martin was treated there.

But yeah he sucks.

Cuonzo was actually who I wanted MSU to hire to replace Stansbury.

They are of the same mold, but Cuonzo is a much better recruiter and coach than Ray at this point. Unfortunately, it prolly didn't matter who we hired after Stans because of the huge segment of fans who wouldn't like anyone besides him.

I would not crown him yet for getting Brown and Rabb. He will find a way to frick t up. He was treated just fine until he failed to make the tourney BOTH of his first two years. He was not denied a plane, didn't have a petition against him, etc. until he was on his way to missing yet another tourney in year 3.

He had Trae Golden, Jordan McRae, Josh Richardson, Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes and couldn't even make the field of 68. The results were absolutely inexcusable.

People act like he is great and was mistreated but the fact of the matter is he inherited a program that got 18K people in to the building a night, had make 6 NCAA tourneys in a row and had multiple guys in the NBA and could not get his teams in to the tournament. He is the greatest coach of all time to make 1 tourney (via the play in game) in 7 years though.
