That happens sometimes, but talent wins more times than not.

How many championships to show for it? Divisional shite don't count either...

The only people that are anti-star gazers are fans of teams that can't recruit stars. But when that team actually lands a big time talent like (Terry Beckner or DGB) they are excited because it's rare.

to further that point, the "we have a system that makes stars a joke" crowd conveniently ignore that we would have a mostly 4-5 star class if all the ones offered actually accepted.

it's a nice spiel and tagline for the buttboys that insist "something wonderful is happening" in lieu of landing a top recruiting class.

It's hard to argue that Patterson isn't one of the better coaches in the game. Winning on a consistent basis, with less talent, is the result of good coaching. He gets maximum effort from his players and that will beat most teams on a given Saturday. His biggest challenge to winning a NC is that he can't overcome a significant talent advantage when the other team is playing up to their potential. I don't think that TCU would have won 2 games against any combination of BAMA, tOSU, Oregon, or FSU.

Patterson, Petersen, Briles, Snyder there are plenty of coaches that have figured out how to win with 2-3 star players.

Difference is that you can win games with out blue chip talent but when was the last national champ that didn't have a roster full if blue chippers? Have to go back to GA Tech in 90 or Washington. Since then its been all blue chip recruiting schools. Miami, Nebraska, Oklahoma, FSU, UF, Tennessee, USC, Auburn, LSU, OSU, Texas and Bama

Mizzou should be proud that they have done well without the loads of 4 and 5 star kids. But its not that Pinkel doesn't want these kids, its that Missouri isn't a huge recruiting state. If Missouri had the talent that resides in Flordia, Louisiana, Georgia, etc, I imagine you'd be singing a different tune.

A couple of other things that drive this for Mizzou.

1. Pinkel really does have his own evaluation system and sticks with it. If a kid is a 4* with the services but Pinkel evaluated a 3* ahead of him, he's recruiting the 3*. This happens once or twice a year on average.

2. Players from Missouri or backwoods locations like West Texas who commit to Mizzou early in the process don't typically get upgraded to a 4* even though they have that talent. Aldon Smith and Denario Alexander are the two best examples of this. Smith was probably a legit 5* but came to Mizzou as a 3*.

I love it because it keeps Mizzou in on very good recruits. You also have to consider that even with these slights from the major services Mizzou has still gotten some very highly ranked kids over the years and almost never misses on high end 4* or 5* talent that make it to campus.

I get the feeling that Petrino was doing almost the same thing with the hogs back in the day. Wisconsin seems to be doing something similar under Alvarez. It seems that the schools that can do this are almost exclusively not on either coast. Probably due to less media hype.

play in the SECe during a period when the top tier historical teams are severely down. Next question.

Gary Pinkel and Missouri have followed a similar plan. So have Michigan State and Mark Dantonio.

Both coaches/teams get routinely crushed by teams with vastly superior talent. Take the 2014 SEC Championship Game (42-13) and the 2011 Capital One Bowl (49-7) as perfect examples of this.

I think the easier way to say it is that you can make it into the top 10 but making it into the top two or three is very difficult without top flight recruiting. So, if you're from one of the teams that won a NC in the last 10 years you probably won't look at this as a good idea. If you're from anywhere else, you probably like the idea.
