South Carolina quarterback commit Brandon McIlwain (Newton, Pa./Council Rock North) was named MVP of the Elite 11 semifinals and was invited to the Elite 11 finals later this summer in Beaverton, Ore., on the Nike Campus.

McIlwain was invite No. 12 to the event, which features the top quarterback prospects in the country.

McIlwain is the No. 8 dual-threat quarterback prospect in the Class of 2016 according to 247Sports Composite rankings. He is the highest-rated commitment thus far in South Carolina's 2016 class.

Here is the Youtube video of the final day's activities - it's a 5-hour long video, but fast-forward to the 4:38:00 mark of the video to hear Trent Dilfer's naming of the Elite 11 Semifinal competition MVP:

LINK

And to think Rivals just dropped McIlwain from a 4* to a 3*, lol. McIlwain won MVP of the Semifinal Elite 11 competition held in California at Southern Cal's campus. He earned an invite as one of the final 12 prospects to compete in the Elite 11 Finals as part of The Opening Finals July 5-11 at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. McIlwain was one of 30 top 2016 QB prospects that competed in Cali, including:

Rivals #1 Dual-threat and overall #2 prospect Shea Patterson (5* - Ole Miss),
Rivals #1 Pro-style and overall #4 Jacob Eason (5* - UGA),
Rivals #2 Dual-threat and overall #15 Malik Henry (5* - FSU),
Rivals #2 Pro-style and overall #27 K.J. Costello (4* - Stanford),
Rivals #3 Pro-style and overall #72 Austin Kendall (4* - Okla.)
Rivals #4 Pro-style and overall #83 Dwayne Haskins (4* - MD)
Rivals #3 Dual-threat and overall #94 Feleipe Franks (4* - LSU)
Rivals #4 Dual-threat and overall #96 Jarrett Guarantano (4* - Tenn.)

Pretty much all the other top pro-style and dual-threat QBs were at this competition, as it's the one for the top QB prospects to earn their way to the highly popular The Opening competition sponsored by Nike and ESPN. And our little ole Brandon McIlwain is rated a 3* dual-threat and overall the 22nd-best dual-threat QB in his class by Rivals? According to the people who ran this semifinal competition, McIlwain showed he was clearly the class of the group the minute he stepped off of the plane.

I always thought Rivals was up there with 247sports when it came to prep FB evaluations (I know ALL of them are never 100% on-target), but they really dropped the ball on this one dropping McIlwain from the 4* ratings. I'm sure they'll bump him right back up there now, lol....

Jacob Eason (Georgia commit) – Eason was one of the guys that looked like he was pressing early in the day but he settled in and quickly looked like the No. 1 QB in the country. Eason was best inside the pocket and his size, arm strength and quick release are all elite

The final invite of the weekend went out to South Carolina commit Brandon McIlwain after he executed a flawless 7on7 session on Sunday afternoon:

"Brandon, I can't say enough about Brandon. I hadn't seen Brandon in a year and to see him come in and he made eye contact with me the first meeting. Every meeting he was so locked in taking copious notes. He was so invested in the process. We've had kids do that before and then stink it up on the field. And he was awesome on the field. So the combination of that, he's everything we're looking for in a kid. If Brandon McIlwain isn't a major league baseball pitcher, second baseman or NFL quarterback, he's probably gonna be more successful being a senator or the president of the united states or a CEO. He's that kind of kid."

There's several out there it you just google it, Conway had a good link a few posts up from this.

Here are some others. 247 had a lot of content on it as well.

This one is great b/c they have a picture of Dylan Thompson on the headline article and not McIlwain.

Here are some 7on7 Top 10 rankings and notes (just SEC though):

On the final day of the Elite 11 semifinals, each quarterback was given six plays with the football in a drive-the-field 7on7 scenario. The quarterbacks were asked to make very specific reads and progressions using a basic playbook and against live competition.

While Sunday's competition was certainly a small body of work, it was also the most valuable six plays of the weekend for these prospects as it was the only six plays that were defended and the most pressure-packed six plays of the event. We found out who stepped up when the lights were on.

Below we take a look at the top ten performances from the 7on7 session. This list does not factor in any previous body of work but represents strictly the one session of 7on7 work for each prospect.

quote:

1. Brandon McIlwain – South Carolina commit
They saved the best for last in McIlwain's 7on7 series. He completed his first three passes, all for about five yards and all showcased good decisive reads and progressions. The fourth ball was a touchdown in the corner of the end zone. McIlwain hit his next two with the sixth pass turning into a long catch and run to inside the 10 yard-line. Trent Dilfer let McIlwain have a seventh play and he made it count, patiently letting some traffic clear before dropping a dime, low and away from the defense and the receiver made a diving grab for the score.
Final numbers: 7-7, 2 TDs
Of note: More than one coach remarked to us how much they liked McIlwain's baseball background and upside as he continues to zero in on the quarterback position.

quote:

8. Jacob Eason – Georgia Commit
Eason dealt with some bad luck. On his first throw an open receiver fell down but Eason made the right read and the right throw. He completed his second down ball to put himself in a 3rd and short situation only to have the receiver drop a pass. He then connected on a curl for a long gain and then found the end zone on a corner route. No receivers were able to get open for him on the last play.
Final numbers: 3-5, 1 TD, 1 Sack
Of note: Eason is probably the most talented prospect out there but he's not as polished as some others. He's a gamer though and looked really cool during 7on7.

quote:

9. Jalen Hurts – Alabama commit
Jalen Hurts is really good at delivering those ever important check-down routes. Some guys throw it late and off balance or out of rhythm or uncatchable fastballs but Hurts is able to re-set his feet and quickly deliver the football in a place that these guys can catch it and make plays with it. He found 3 of those type of passes but also hit on two intermediate level routes, showing plenty of arm and zip.
Final numbers: 5-6
Of note: Hurts told us that he's known Alabama would be his destination for about a month and that he had built strong relationships with several coaches on the staff.

Sounds like Eason should have been 5-6 and possible 6-6. Oh well.

Here's a great write up of the qbs so far.

Barton Simmons Article

quote:

The top arm
Jacob Eason remains the top arm in the country according to 247Sports but it's not as if the Georgia commit is on a totally different level relative to the rest of the class. We like Eason because he's really big with an even bigger arm and as a three-sport athlete, things come easy to him. There are a lot of quarterbacks that have more polish but that's what makes Eason's upside that much higher.

quote:

Who's No. 2 Behind Eason there are a lot of candidates for that No. 2 quarterback spot. Ole Miss commit Shea Patterson had a great workout on Saturday but then took a step back on Sunday (excusable given it was his third consecutive day throwing on minimal rest). He's extremely polished and though he doesn't have elite size, he has an Aaron Rodgers type of release and mobility to compensate.

Feleipe Franks may have as good of a case as anybody to land at that No. 2 spot or even No. 1 but he still needs to continue to develop. The LSU commit is huge, with one of the country's strongest arms and he's athletic. As the technique continues to come, Franks is a definite candidate to claw his way to the top.

quote:

The upside guys
Auburn commit Woody Barrett falls into that category too. The guy looks like a linebacker at quarterback but he can spin it. How accurate is he going to become at Auburn, how consistent? That's the question that will be the difference between him being a successful college QB and an NFL guy.

quote:

Tennessee commit Jarrett Guarantano. Every one of those guys has first round NFL upside. But every time you see them, a different guy is the best of the group.

quote:

Small but talented
What do you do with a guy like Brandon McIlwain who is only 6-0, but he's athletic, he's split time between baseball and football, he can have a pedestrian outing on one day (like Saturday at the Elite 11 semifinals) and then be the best guy on the field the next (like Sunday at the Elite 11 semifinals)? McIlwain has a lot of Russell Wilson in him in terms of personality, size and his multi-sport background. Can he be another outlier at South Carolina?
