5th in the nation, 7th in the sec. Got it. Tied with Alabama for most elite, impact guy type players.

Having seen quite a few of these "average" guys headed to BR, I can assure you SOG, that the Tigers have once again pulled in an outstanding class. I'm sure you're aware of some of the 3* talent they're getting because Nick was recruiting several of them.

Come on guys, this was not meant as some sort of slight on LSU. They signed a ton of elite guys and a bunch of solid guys.

I think the problem you're encountering is that not many people are actually reading what metric it is you're charting. Too many keep referring to 'stars' indicating that they don't understand it's a position ranking.

I was looking at this with LSU's class just the other day, how many 1-10 guys at their position were we getting as opposed to 4-5 star guys. There were a lot in the 1-10 range, but then a lot in the 30-50 range it seemed - just as your post shows.

You get an 'A' for effort, but a 'D-' for exposing LSU's middle.

It's a very imperfect metric, too. Like I said, a better way would be to remove JuCos and split average into high average and low average. But hey, is what it is.

A class like LSU would have 95% high average and 5% low average, while Vandy would have 20% high average and 80% low average.

No slight taken with you George. Just a few of us head-scratching at some of the rankings, having seen these kids play. 'Bama has the best overall class IMO but I'd put LSU's right there with the best of the rest.

Definitely Randy. Like I said above, LSU has mostly high-average guys (Top 30 at their position or so). They also have a ton of elite guys (Top 5 at their position). Great class, as usual.

I just thought it was interesting because if you sign five 5-star QBs........only one can play

Ask OSU about that. They played 3 QBs this year. They weren't all 5* but that 3rd stringer was pretty good.

Yeah, comparing a #1 deep snapper to a #1 RB is a little silly.

So yeah, say if there were 100 RBs in the pool of potential signees, #15 would be in the top 20%, but if there were 15 DSs in the pool and you got #10, he's in the bottom 25% of DSs.

You're right, some kind of normalization would allow a better comparison across positions.

So, basically LSU's class is full of players who are either elite or average. Makes sense.

you have to have roster fillers/back ups too.

It just has always struck me as imperfect that three 5-star QBs count as three 5-stars when another group signs the #1 TE, #1 Punter and #2 Guard and if you compared the two the 3 great players at one position would rank much, much higher. Great punters, tight ends and interior linemen are pretty important, yet the best at those positions are routinely ranked below solid but not elite RBs and WRs.

Sure and to show you how stars and averages can be deceiving at times, Les signed another elite Australian punter and the number one rated long-snapper in the country. They're both 2* guys so they sunk your average rating but both will likely be 3 or 4 year starters for an SEC power and I would bet the punter winds up playing on Sundays.

Agree - and the punter will probably end up winning a game or two for you and contributing to a bunch of wins ala JK Scott for us and all your aussie punters in the past.

That should be worth more than 2-stars IMHO.
