Using 247 Composite rankings, here is a breakdown of # of commits that fall under each level. They are grouped by ranking in position group (JuCo is its own group so some schools have more 'elite' that may not actually be 'elite' due to JuCos - State and South Carolina had quite a few JuCos).

So, basically LSU's class is full of players who are either elite or average. Makes sense.

No, LSU signed a bunch of elite players and also seemed to sign some high average filler type guys is what I took away from it.

I wasn't being sarcastic. This is exactly what LSU did. I could have worded it differently I guess.

Tied with Alabama for most elite, impact guy type players.

I just thought it was interesting because if you sign five 5-star QBs........only one can play.

Perfect example - our #1 in his position punter that we signed last year was as important as just about any signee we had. He was still a 3-star, but he was the #1 punter at his position. Same with a #1 FB or TE.

They all ranked below 20th at their positions. That doesn't make them chumps, it just means they aren't looked at as one of the 20 best players at their position.

Does this include the punter and long snapper?

If your punter was #1 at his position he goes in the #1-5 category, which I think makes sense, because regardless of their star great punters matter quite a bit.

eh

Probably not a whole lot of difference in some of these position rankings.

Agreed at the margins. I think if you are Top 5 though you are probably an impact type player. If you stack up guys ranked in the top 5-10 at their position you should be a pretty good team.

You could probably break it down further by removing JuCo kids and adding a High-Average and Low-Average category breaking it at about 30th or so at each position. Would probably show a bigger difference.

Agree. That's why I always look at the Top 10 classes as very similar to each other. A team is more likely to succeed with the #10 class each year vs. the #75 class each year. But #10 will be very close to #5 in talent level, thus projected success. Key positions (e.g. QB) make up a lot of the deficiencies or put a team above the rest.

Yep. Also, some positions are really hard to judge for 95% of folks who evaluate (including some elite coaches) like the offensive line. Outside of no-doubt Left Tackles like Cam Robinson, it is really difficult to assess high school OL. That is why guys like Bert who have track records are really impressive. Not to mention some areas are easier to develop than others.
