students should be able to withdraw whenever they want. They arent employed by the university

They can withdraw from school. Nothing is stopping him from going to another university. He is just limited from playing bball at a few schools...he can attend those universities if he wishes, just like a regular student, since that is what you all want to compare athletes too...

Im really confused as to how this is even a problem. Why would you help any other school in state out? All Memphis has is basketball. Why would they want to help Tenn out with that. I could see this being a discussion for a football player maybe.

FWIW, they also blocked him from Providence, Iowa, and Virginia. I'm guessing because of their previous involvement in his recruitment. They don't play any of those guys either.
They do play them in a future tournament

This line of logic is so bad. Most kids commit to schools to play for certain coaches and these coaches can bolt without consequence.

You said this....
Then this.....
First, most coaches cannot bail without consequences. Secondly, the NCAA is more lenient about transfers for coaching changes or trouble.
My post had to do with others trying to compare athletes with "regular" students. They aren't even close to being the same...
If you've read the entire conversation, you would understand the argument. No more responses to you until you provide a slight bit of intelligence.

Confirmed: Nichols' release has been changed to unconditional and is now able to choose which ever University he so chooses.

Memphis has removed all conditions from Austin Nichols’ transfer.

Not surprisingly but hearing that Tennessee definitely interested and also hearing that Rick Barnes has already reached out to the family since the news of his release broke. Obviously he's going to be a hot commodity.

Tennessee somehow made this happen.

Gotta love Barnes track record of getting guys to the league. Hopefully his sister has some pull in getting him up to UT.

From what they are saying here it was Virginia that made this happen.

So a lawyer threatened to sue Memphis State and they removed all restrictions, correct?
Yeah. I hope this is a trend that keeps up.

Yeah, from everything I've read Virginia seems like the team to beat at the moment.
Anyone know how their big man situation is going into this season?

Apparently they are basically bringing back their entire roster outside of Justin Anderson. They apparently recruited him really hard the first time around.
I think the sister thing matters, but if I was a betting man I would bet on UVA or Duke landing him.

The attorney is a UVA grad, or so I've read on another TN message board. So, take it for what it's worth.

Can someone link a story saying that?

From Parrish:

Nichols has no shortage of high-profile suitors -- among them Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Gonzaga, North Carolina, Texas, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Tennessee. But multiple sources have told CBSSports.com that Virginia should be considered the leader.
Paul Tudor Jones is a billionaire from Memphis who graduated from Virginia and has a relationship with Nichols' former AAU coach, Ernie Kuyper. That's the connection here. And multiple people close with Nichols have suggested Nichols' preference, at this moment, is to transfer into Tony Bennett's ACC program.
