Maybe I'm missing the party where I thought they were your in-state rival and you compete for the same recruits every year and said school wouldn't want their rival gaining a 4/5 star recruit and boosting Tennessee's program. But that's just a guess

Unless we meet in a tournament, we will likely not play Memphis for another 10+ years.

How can they be a rival if we don't play?

Is this an admission there's no chance Tennessee makes the NCAA Tournament while he's there?

Ok, but they could end up facing him in the NCAA tournament no matter where he goes? How are you not grasping this?

What a huge victory that'd be for us. Suddenly 2016 wouldn't look like a major rebuilding season

You specifically yelled that could never play.

But apparently you're the only one that can't grasp why a school would restrict a kid from going to another instate school in the same division (and rival, whether you want to admit it or not). Who also competes for the same area recruits. Especially in the Memphis area which is a basketball recruiting hotbed.

But hey, yell some more and call all of us morons.

It was done out of spite, and pure and simple. And the only reason you're arguing with me is because I called Calipari a cheating cheater who cheats

Nah. I'm just calling you on your whining when this stuff happens to other teams/players all the time.

But by all means, think it revolves all around you.

I gotta side with V&S on this one. Austin not being allowed to go to UT is just petty shite from that dumbass Pastner. Austin's sister goes to UT and it was one of his finalists. They don't play each other any time soon and they aren't in the same conference.

The recruiting angle doesn't work because a lot of schools recruit from Memphis. Hell Kentucky just stole the #1 recruit in the country from here.

I doubt there is much truth to the rumor that he is considering Bama, but he was close with the former Memphis player Nick King who just transferred here.

The same coaches that put conditional releases in players, can leave the school at any time and coach immediately somewhere else.

It's just stupid. IMO, if a kid has the grades, he should be allowed to go play anywhere if released

It's pretty shitty when his twin sister goes to UT and we finished 2nd in his recruitment out of HS. Why block that when they won't play us?

Right. Maybe it makes the player look childish for leaving after making a commitment to be there...

He made a commitment and signed the papers to go there AND HE DID...FOR TWO YEARS.

Now he doesn't want to be there, if the coach wasn't such a whiney baby you'd let him go where he wants. It only makes the coach look terrible, period. This is going to be used against him in recruiting ad nauseam now and rightfully so.

It's understandable enough. Pastner and the dumpster fire that Memphis basketball has slowly eroded into don't want Barnes and UT Basketball establishing a presence in the city. Like what's currently happening with us reestablishing our presence in the area in football again.

I get it, but it's petty. He's been getting blasted by national and state media, and deservedly so, IMO. Memphis as a fan base collectively seem ready for the guy to find another home.

Memphis isn't a rival. In my experience, people from East TN are always shocked when they learn of Memphis' disdain for UT

They have zero presence in the state outside of Memphis(similar to Ole Miss). It's not hard to see why.

Idc about them restricting him to where he can't come to UT but Memphis has a serious problem. Partner is turning that program into a shitshow but they gave him a ridiculous extension after year 2 that they can't possibly pay the buyout and he's only made it out of the first round once.

I, unlike most UT fans, actually root for Memphis but they will never get where they want to be with Pastner. Yes he's a great guy but that doesn't win basketball games

It's pretty self-explanatory honestly. You're in direct competition with them for recruits, coverage, etc. And they've lost a lot of the ground they built up under Calipari at this point.

FWIW, they also blocked him from Providence, Iowa, and Virginia. I'm guessing because of their previous involvement in his recruitment. They don't play any of those guys either.

I'm not saying it's right or noble, but it's not uncommon either. Originally they weren't going to release him to anyone before they made the conditional release change.
