How fast he runs his offense.
This was the correct answer.

Depends on the school I am at.
If I can't get talent on the level with the top teams then I go for an offensive guy that can do more with less. If I can get talent on the level with the top teams then I go for the top defensive guy that can recruit.
If I am at a big school I go for a guy that has proven he can build a program from the ground up and can sustain it. If they coach in an average conference then I look at their OOC games hardest.
If the coach is winning and is not just out-manning his opponents then he likely has alot of the other qualities I would be looking for.

- comes from a defensive background, but has had a lot of success with offense
doesn't matter, either works
quote:
- is the current head coach in a major BCS conference
IDC about this. Urban Meyer was at Utah before Florida after all
quote:
is a cool coach that players gravitate towards
personality doesn't matter unless it affects recruiting negatively. guys like Saban and Meyer are pretty much dicks - not everyone is Spurrier
quote:
has proven to be able to sustain success
most great hires don't fit this category. Saban had a meh resume coming from Michigan State. Miles had a mediocre resume coming from Ok State. Meyer was a job hopper. Most up and comers move from place to place too quickly to prove this ability.

You forgot the size of his gut.
A football coach has to have a bolier. The bigger the better.

- builds his team from the lines out
I've seen this referenced a couple of times recently in regard to Bert. This is not a novel approach to the game. I'm pretty sure building your lines is Football 101.
#1 for me is a coach that has a philosophy and builds his program around it and doesn't waver. The complete change in philosophy is what put the nail the coffin of our last 2 coaches.

A proven head coach. You think it would be common sense...

I would look for successful head coaching experience somewhere down the line, even if it's at a lower level.
All the years as a successful position coach or coordinator do not necessarily translate into a good head coach. I don't have to look any further than guys like Chizik or Ellis Johnson to see that.

Yes, some career assistants make good head coaches eventually.

It is, but some coaches struggle with it. Bucket step Bob still has a job as an offensive line coach
