Bloomberg/Business Week 2011 ranking of undergraduate business programs...

Overall undergraduate business rankings of SEC schools:

#42 - Florida
#57 - Georgia
#75 - Alabama
#92 - South Carolina
#101 - Arkansas
#103 - LSU
#112 - Kentucky
NR - Auburn
NC - Tennessee
NC - Ole Miss
NC - Mississippi State

Didn't see Vandy anywhere which is strange. I guess they didn't send in any data.

* NR - not ranked due to not enough data provided
* NC - not consider or did not participate

For Alabama, the best specialized program would have to be it's Public Relations program which was ranked #1 in the country in the last set of rankings just ahead of NYU. The Accounting program is ranked in the top 25 every year and the overall business program as well as the MBA program in the most recent rankings was ranked just behind Vandy, Florida, and UGA among SEC schools. The UA Law school has been ranked as high as #30 overall among all schools and has been in the Top 40 for the last few years.

Add the MIS program to that list. When I graduated in 02 it was top 10 in the nation (maybe top 5). I'm assuming Dr. Hale and his wife are still running the department and haven't let it slide too much.

When you consider the fact that there are over 900 business schools in the country, for almost all SEC schools to be ranked in somewhat impressive. No they aren't Harvard or Wharton, but who is even close in the south besides Texas?

Very true. The conference as a whole does incredibly well when you consider how poorly funded higher education is funded in most Southern states compared to other regions of the country.

FWIW, if you're going to practice law outside of the South, these are the only schools that really carry that much weight.

Ole Miss is fine if you wanna be a junior partner at a Memphis law firm or sue people's balls off in Jackson, but it really doesn't have much weight elsewhere.

Don't sell Ole Miss law short though. It dominates Mississippi and does very nicely in Louisiana, Alabama, and especially Memphis. Truth be told, once you get out of the top 20 most schools have a more regional focus.

The 4 schools you listed either have highly desirable legal markets in their states or in Alabama's case have very aggressively recruited star candidates with scholarships. UA law has become quite difficult to get into for this reason.

At UGA I know that Terry is year in and year out one of the best Business Colleges in the nation. The Graduate and Undergraduate programs for landscape Architecture rank 1st and 2nd, respectively. Grady College of Journalism is ranked top 10. Ag and Equine programs are both very well respected. One of the top Law Schools in the nation. When I was in school we had the #2 Forestry school in the nation (Montana was #1).#12 in VetMed, too, I think.

I believe your statement about the astronaut corps is true. Also, AU has a great engineering program. Several of my friends graduated through that program.

It's been said, but Bama's School of Business & School of Law are both fantastic.

LSU law is better than those if you want to practice internationaly because Louisiana law is based on civil law not common law like the rest of the US
