Losing 59-0 hurts a lot worse than losing 23-17.

Not for me. I get too emmotionally invested into close games. They sting way worse than knowing for a fact that you are going to lose. Like others said, I can usually just laugh blowouts off. Loosing close games as an underdog is different obviously.

blowout
you can say "we played like shite we deserved to lose"
the close ones you sit there and look at the margins, you outwardly blame the refs and the cheating this and the damn that, and privately you go back and look at all lil margins where you screwed yourself out of a win
a missed field goal here, a turnover there, you replay it over
with blowout you just say "got our asses beat, on to the next one"

If Bama has to lose, I would rather it be convincing. I don't want any excuses when Bama beats itself.

I didn't disagree, but it's also not usually a reasonable comparison. If you lose 59-0 in the middle of a decent season, that is terrible.
If you get blown out for the 5th time in a season when nobody is even trying anymore, it's hard to muster a lot of emotion about it.

an "L" is an "L" any way you put it. that being said I would rather lose a close "competitive" game than be blown out.
But I wouldn't want to lose a close game by out-dumbing the other team like Tennessee did vs LSU in 2010

Would rather not lose. If losing is inevitable, would rather fight to the end. LSU VS MSU at least had some positives because we fought back and were in position to win on the last play. After Auburn I was fricking depressed for a week.

Or loosing like when Brandon Cox was our quarterback...1st and goal on the 4 yard line with 1 minute left to win it.....only to fail on 4 straight attempts.

To this day....the worst loss I have experienced is to Auburn this past season......I just laughed when TCU gangraped us
I have a new found hate for Auburn now.

Good point. Context can change perception.
I would much rather have lost by 30 to NC State in the tourney than lose the way we did. Conversely if that choke happened midseason while trying to build a tourney resume it would be much easier to swallow than a 30 point drubbing.

I think it depends. Compare how we lost to Nebraska to how Auburn lost to Florida State in the title game.

Give me close losses over blowouts.
Those games tend to make me think about what went wrong/right for a much longer period than "not showing up" games.
I don't learn much with a 30-0 type loss...
