My answer is yes, only because of the talent across across the board and the high level at which Tuberville was coaching at the time. My only real concern is I’m not sure how well Chizik’s defense would do against the RPO spread teams of today.

Who knows USC was pretty good. They would have obviously made the playoff.

No. That USC team was absolutely loaded.

They barely squeaked by a mediocre Virginia Tech in their bowl game.

Auburn 04 was certainly an okay team but no world-beaters or anything.

In a way Auburn fans are lucky that team got left out of the playoff because if they hadn't it's more likely than not they would have been the ones getting humiliated by USC.

Instead y'all get to cling to all of these fantasies that you've made up about that team.

No. They really weren't that good. The benefactors of a down conference except LSU.

No. Although Auburn was the SEC’s best team that year, USC was undoubtedly a superior TEAM. And even though I don't think Auburn would have gotten hosed by 36 (USC 55 - OU 19), the Trojans would have been a stone-cold lock to capture their second consecutive national championship.

No...no...and NO!...because it was Auburn, and no one likes Auburn, no one wants to see “more” of Auburn, so no, Auburb wouldn’t have gotten in in 2004, and even an undefeated Barn would have been passed over in favor of UCF last year. Just accept it....NO MORE BARN.. is a national slogan.

In other words, frick Auburn, and frick their fantasies, delusions, and their whole “fambly” including their snaggle-toothed female cousins.

Auburn deeply romanticizes their undefeated teams even though two of them have huge asterisks.

93 - Sat out the SEC Championship and the National Championship game, what would have been two of the toughest games of the whole year. It's easy not to lose when you don't play.

04 - Dodged a super loaded and playing lights out USC team. Would you have beaten them? Maybe. But probably not. USC would have been a pretty significant favorite.

Sit out all the championship games, claim how easy it would have been to win them. Nice life.

Maybe

I'm ok with those who say no bc of USC. Not too much of a slight considering 2004 USC is an all-time elite team.

I would strongly argue that 2004 Auburn in most years would win the title.

How the frick does 2004 have an asterisk?

AU did everything asked of them, often in very compelling fashion, and didn't get a chance to play for it.

I don't think so. I'm not gonna be stupid and say they weren't a good team or overrated, they were a damn good team. But I think if they had to play either USC/OU, then turn around the following weak and play the other one of those 2, I think it'd be too much for them to have done. Down the back stretch they played a bad bama team, a mediocre UT in the SECCG, and slipped past a 3 loss VT in their bowl game. That back to back combo of USC/OU would be a totally different animal.

Did you watch that game? VT was nowhere in the neighborhood of having a chance in that game.

Accurate statement, just had the misfortune of being in 2004 with 2 other big time programs being undefeated and one of them being an all-time type team
