Gainsville isn't great, but the swamp certainly lives up to the billing. Outside of the tailgate and stadium, the next best thing in Gainsville is Cafe Risky (sp?), and that's being generous.

Their beaches might be "pretty" but something always seemed fake about them to me. I don't know the Gulf just doesn't do it for me. It's basically a lake.

Not that Gainesville is on water anyways.

No way I could live there, but for vacation I love it. It's great relaxation for a week.

No one lives in that part of the state. No one from FL really even goes to that part of the state. And the point of a state's flagship university is primarily to serve it's population. Kind of hard to explain, especially to people who vacation there and their main perception of the state comes from that area. The perecpetion of most FL natives couldn't be more different.

You are an idiot.

and I have been to Jacksonville many times. Have been from one end of the State to the other end. Every part of it has downsides and every part has it's good sides. Jax has good surf. That's about it.

Flat, shallow, and not as affected by tides. I enjoy the Gulf as a change of pace, but it just doesn't have that majestic feeling that the ocean does.

The idiots are posting way to early. The LSU kids make the graduates of LSU sound like LSU is scared to play Florida every year.

I'm not saying Jax is great, but like you said it has surf and you can be in Miami or ATL in 6 hours. I just don't care for the isolated feel of the panhandle. Speaking of isolation, I can be in Ocala National Forest in about 2 hours from Jax, when I'm in that mood. Or Cumberland Island in about 1.

I was hammered when we went to that place, but it wasn't too far from Gainsville, otherwise we wouldn't have gone there. The bars were ok on Friday night as well, but I wasn't wowed. It pales in comparison to Athens, Baton Rouge and Knoxville, but it is nowhere near as bad as Starkville, like some have posted recently.

Jax has a lot to offer. But you have to find your niche and live in that area. Once you do that, the rest of the city doesn't really even matter to you. The city when viewed as a whole, does pretty much suck. Orange Park is suburban, strip mall hell. And that's why I don't live there or go there.

Those islands do not exist anymore.
