well actually he was fired b/c he didn't submit to Boone a plan of action written on paper to improve the program after that one bad year. Cut wanted to stick with his guys but the fans wanted blood and pressured Khayat and Boone to can his arse causing him to cry and piss of Archie at the same time.

You're saying Romaro was the starting quarterback for the 2002 independence bowl against Nebraska? You wanna bet a million dollars on it?

That was some serious SEC home office bullshite right there. Something similar happened to us one year as well.

Happened to State in '97.

This thread is all kinds of dumb. Cutcliffe's success at Duke is more a result of the mediocrity of the ACC than it is Cutcliffe's coaching ability. If he sustains it and turns Duke into an ACC power, I'll eat my words but he won 10 games with Ole Miss in 03 and won 4 the next year. That's what will likely happen in 2014. He only has a good season every 10 years. 2024, watch out. Until then, zzzzzzzzzz.

Literally wasn't doing his job. There were obvious changes on the staff that needed to be made on defense and he said he wouldn't do it. He had all but quit recruiting (not that he was ever really good at it) and he had lost the team. He's a great coach, no doubt, but in 2004, Cutcliffe stopped doing his job. He had 19 or 20 starters back from the '03 team that went 10-3 and he went 4-8. If that doesn't sound like he quit, I don't know what does.

You guys really had an Indy bowl dynasty in the works there with Cut. Disappointing yaw yaw regressed rather than bumping yall up a level to a chicken bowl dynasty like LSU is building now a days.

No, it didn't happen to State in '97. The Motor City Bowl needed a team or Ole Miss wouldn't have gone bowling either.

We lost the Motor City Bowl play-in game to Ole Miss. The Music City Bowl started the next year.

You're right... I'm being old.. We went to Music City Romaro's senior year and Eli came in when WV was beating our brains in... What Cutcliffe has done at Duke is impressive but when they play FSU this weekend people are going to see that the Blue Devils benefitted greatly from a very easy schedule.

Both made terrible USC west coast hires who had no SEC experience and All Davis even had a three hour press conference saying what a prick Kiffin was and publicly fired him.

But I'd say firing Cut because it was a case of a program not understanding where it was from where it thought it was.

My version sounds better though.

Ole miss thought they could fire and hire whoever they pleased. They wanted the appearance of being an elite program. The list of coaches that said no to ole miss during the coaching search:

Petrino - HELL NO! not interested
Neuheisal - HELL NO! coach who again?
Erickson - HELL to the NO! Thanks for the interview though.
Willingham - HELL NO! hahaha
Dan Hawkins - HELL NAW!!!! I'm holding out for Colorado job.
Tommy West - I'll Pass. Memphis >>> ole miss
Ed O - YAW, YAW, YAW, YAW, WILD BOYS, YAW!

IIRC, we offered or at least sent feelers out to Cutcliffe but he didn't want to leave Duke in the lurch the way Kiffin did us. Also, one of the unstated issues was that a helluva lot of coaches (both those who worked for Phil and those who didn't) did not want to take the job right after Fulmer not only because of friendship and loyalty to Fulmer but also because they felt the UT AD did Fulmer wrong given all he'd done for us.

IMO, there's no way in hell Cutcliffe would've taken the job in those circumstances. Fulmer was loyal to a fault when it came to those around him and in return they were extremely loyal to him.

Fans may love him or hate him but the coaching fraternity is small and Fulmer had and has a lot of friends within that small circle of coaches -- players too.

Cutcliffe started Rob fricking Robertson ahead of Patrick Willis because he was a senior. Our talent was shite after he got fired too. Our defense was awful. Sure Boone screwed up the hire afterwards but he was terrible too. A true shite show all around.

Cutcliffe - he was winning at OM and they fired him for one bad year. Serves them right that they sucked for years after that.
