I had several classes where i did this. Usually the professor would tell us "I don't care about attendance as long as you show up on test days" after he/she passed out the syllabus.

I don't think this one counts. The OP asked about athletes getting special treatment. Johns got the boot immediately.
In recent history, I'd have to say DJ Hall. He stayed in trouble.
I saw the AU fan mention Trey Blackmon, but I think Lamarcus Rowell got a much longer leash. He had several arrests before Tubs cut him loose.
