Mike Price, he did not win one single game, fact!

Woody Widenhofer coached at MU long before he coached at Vanderbilt.

can we put Mike Price up there even though he did not ever coach a game. His sudden firing caused Bama to hire MS who did not even have the luxury of having a spring practice

I guess the Tuberville vs Chizik/ Malzahn question is if you prefer a national title with a whole bunch of suckitude mixed in, or if you prefer Tuberville's annual 8-4 seasons.

OK ... I am not getting the folks listing Mike Archer.
Sure, he deserved to get fired ... but taken as a whole?
So ... in four seasons ... you have a Top 5 FINISH (not a pre-season ranking ... a FINISH) ... a share of an SEC title ... and an overall record of 27-18-1 ... and this guy is supposedly one of two worst (head) coaches in team history?
Hell ... a couple of years ago ... I don't remember which game, but I was there (maybe Washington) ... Archer was brought back to be honored at halftime.

In 1987, LSU finished the season ranked #5 in both major polls with a 10–1–1 record, blemished only by a tie against Ohio State and a loss to Alabama. The latter was all that kept the Tigers out of the 1988 Sugar Bowl; Auburn went instead. It was LSU's first 10-win season in more than 25 years. Archer's Tigers followed up with an 8–4 record and a share of the Southeastern Conference title in 1988. The 1988 season was famous for the "Earthquake Game," a 7–6 victory over Auburn.

Joe Kines was interim coach who replaced Jack Crowe after Citadel loss. Kines only coached the remainder of that season. Since Frank Broyles, the worst coaches are:
1. Jack Crowe
2. John L. Smith

not sure an interim counts?

Plus, the OP should specify (head coach time only) ... because a lot of folks have good years as coordinators, position coaches, and such (sometimes with the same team that they HC for) ... and then sucked as a head coach.
I would think that "interim" should count ... the games counted and the person was the acting HC for those games.

quote:Well, you do have to consider the program's history. Curley Hallman is a clear #1 worst at LSU. After that, it gets iffy. People hate on Miles a lot, but he has a national title and another appearance, and a string of solid seasons, so he's clear. Saban is obviously clear. Dinardo... he "brought the magic back", he had to restore LSU to a winning program, and he did. Clear.

Historically, LSU has had winning guys. Archer took a program that Bill Arnsparger built up, and in four seasons ran it downhill.
Maybe his biggest competition would be from Jerry Stovall, but he had a good season (Orange Bowl appearance and respectable showing vs a strong Nebraska team), plus he's a hero as a player.
I can't list an interim here, gotta go with a guy with a contract.

How could Oregeron not be worse than both of them, especially Cutcliffe?
Orgeron took over after Cutcliffe left us with no talent and was rebuilding from that disaster. Then Nutt took orgerons recruits and built a winner till the talent ran out! Easy.
Freeze is starting ver also. Orgeron wasn't a good game day coach but was building talent niether Cutcliffe or Nutt cared! Thus worse!
