KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee football program announced today Charlton Warren has agreed to terms to become the defensive backs coach for the Vols. Warren served as defensive backs coach at North Carolina the last two seasons and also has spent time on the Nebraska and Air Force coaching staffs. Willie Martinez will not be returning after serving as defensive backs coach for the Vols the past four seasons.
"We would like to welcome Coach Warren, his wife, Jocelyn, and their three children to the Tennessee family," said Tennessee head football coach Butch Jones. "Coach Warren is a passionate, knowledgeable and driven football coach that has an outstanding history of developing defensive backs on the collegiate level. He also has a great reputation as one of the top recruiters in the country with strong ties to our recruiting areas. We feel extremely fortunate to add someone of his caliber to our coaching staff and our defensive meeting room.
"I have known Willie Martinez for a long time and have the utmost respect for him as a coach and a person. I want to thank him for all his contributions to the Tennessee program over the past four seasons. Making changes on your staff is never easy, but we feel it's necessary as we move forward as a program."

Butch was told halfway through the season he would be making some staff changes like it or not.

Willie has known for quite some time he wouldn't be returning.
Reached out to a couple SEC schools in the past month.

On the surface seems like a good hire. While nc wasn't good on defense last year they did have the number 12 pass defense in the nation.

Really good hire. I posted some more stats/info on him on our board if anyone is interested. Seems like a very good position coach and recruiter.

Not for much longer

I posted earlier that unc was 12th in pass defense someone made me aware that they are 10th in fewest pass attempts per game meaning nobody tried to throw on them. The question is was it because unc had the number 109 ranked run defense so nobody had to throw or because they steered away from throwing because it was so easy to run on them

The North Carolina run defense seems like it's been Fedora's achilles heel since he took over so it's tough to say.
This is encouraging though, from UNC's site:

Charlton Warren joined the football program as the defensive backs coach in 2015.
In his first year in Chapel Hill, Warren’s secondary was among the best in the ACC and helped lead the nation’s most improved defense. Carolina allowed 14.5 fewer points in 2015 from the previous season, the best improvement of any Power 5 program.
UNC also had the most improved pass defense in the country in both efficiency and yards per pass attempt, and was the fifth-most improved team in passing yards per game. Carolina led the ACC in interceptions, turnovers gained, turnover margin and passes defended en route to a record-setting 11-3 season and a berth in the ACC Championship Game and a No. 15 final ranking in both national polls.
Warren coached cornerbacks M.J. Stewart and Des Lawrence to All-ACC seasons as each recorded 14 pass breakups and ranked among the top four in the league in passes defended per game.

He def looks like a upgrade for you guys. Will there be anymore changes on staff?

I think just about anyone is going to be a upgrade over Martinez at this point, but I'm encouraged by this hire.
In terms of staff changes, We just hired Rock Gullickson from the LA Rams as S&C coach last week after Jeff Fischer got let go. Very happy with that pickup and think it's another big upgrade.
We still are looking to add or replace:
-Offensive Co.
-QB coach
-OL Coach
-DL coach

Great hire for Tennessee and no Heels fans wanted to see him go. In fact, many were hoping he'd be promoted to DC if Chizik decided to leave.
I'd say most of our pass D success was do to our porous rush D. That and we played two triple option teams. Lawrence and Stewart made a great corner duo and they looked well coached. Our safety play was less impressive. We had 1 interception on the year. That's right. 1. The WHOLE year. Still, Warren will be missed and is a good pick up for Tennessee. I like him as a recruiter also.
