Except I've never been caged up in a pen on the sidelines of a ballgame, for the entertainment of a hundred thousand screaming football fans.

edit: I frankly don't give a schit, but that's the perspective of the PETA types, and maybe they have a point.

I'm sure a caring LSU fan will let them in the MikeVII habitat to check on his well being. Ya know, for humanitarian purposes.

Well, have you ever been debilitated to the point that you could never successfully go live a normal life outside of a protective environment? If the options are essentially hospice care or starving to death in the wild, which do you choose?

David Baker probably has 2-3 tigers lined up and was waiting on Roscoe to pass to determine the next move. I would expect VII to be in the habitat by Mardi Gras.

If that was forced (the pen on the sidelines), you might have a point... although a number of mascots, including dogs, raptors, the occasional bovine, goat, bison etc also go through that. You do have to put a big cat into an enclosure to make sure he doesn't freak out and maul a dozen or more fans.

That being said, the last Mike didn't go to many games. He didn't want to go into the cage for whatever reason, and the trainers and handlers didn't prod, tranquilize, or otherwise force him to. Some folks remarked about it, but it was a non-issue to the administration, and really, to most of the fans. He hung out in his habitat, and all was good.

I never took the opportunity to try to watch him during a game while he was in the habitat, to see if the noise bothered him; but as I have never heard of him appearing freaked out and roaring, even through casual word of mouth, it seems like he wasn't bothered by it. If anyone has, maybe they can reply.
