not intended as a dig
saw a special segment on sec network on the number of former head coaches working as coordinators in the sec.
most of these guys came from smaller programs as head coaches with the notable exceptions of kiffin and muschamp.
kiffin is just lucky to have a job
but muschamp was the hot name in assistants for years got his shot at a top 5 program and failed and got fired.
he inherits a dumpster fire goes 7-6, then 11-2 and signs the number 7 recruiting class in the nation. one bad season and one mediocre one he's gone. penthouse to outhouse
hell bert would do back flips for 7-6, 11-2, 4-8!
the man has got to have some ego and it has to stick in his crawl at least a little bit.
"It's not just about being the head coach,” Muschamp said after becoming the defensive coordinator at Auburn. "It's about being somewhere where you know that you're going to get the support, the resources and the finances you need to have to be successful and to win championships.”
what happens if auburn goes 8-5 again does finger pointing start?
do you guys think he gets another shot at a big time program and do you even think he wants one?
i think if i were giving him advise, i would have told him to take a year off and look for another head coaching gig.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but Alabama shattered team offensive records last fall.

Lol. He's still making a ton of money with far less responsibility.
Zook snapped up another HC gig and now he manages a bank.

I think he's pretty relieved to not be in a pressure situation as a head coach right now. He can focus on his specialty at a school that he obviously loves.

Not going to bash the guy. He did some things I like and some things I didn't. He is a defensive guy and needs to stick with that and be a Chavis or Bud Foster and hone his craft. Nothing wrong with that.

Depends. I think he needs to rehab his reputation as a defensive whiz, take a smaller than UF job, then see what happens.
Obviously a job that is smaller than UF can still be pretty big. But he's getting what, 5 mil over 3 years at Auburn? So it's probably a pretty good decision if he's confident he can at least make improvements to the defense.
If he takes a year off, goes back to work making 1.5 as a HC and fails, he's cooked for a while on the HC circuit. Or he can go to Auburn, which is in a pretty good position to compete for titles, try and rehab an underperforming defense to some extent, and parlay that into an HC job that is a good situation.
I can see both sides, but unless he's really jaded about the step down, I think it's a good choice.

So he didn't have any support or resources or the finances to be successful at UF? Seemed to work for Urban.

Off-season, Bret is fat, stop making threads, none of it matters, get a life...

Well Urban is the best coach in football. People like muschamp need more to be successful.

thank you great answer, i can absolutely see that as well, he knocks it out off the ball park on defense in two years he might be right back of the top in the hot assistants pecking order.
just can't think of another coach that's happened to on the college level, pros are a different story.
getting fired as a head coach seems to be a resume enhancer in the pros.
most coaches at the college level seem to fit the mold of working their way down the ladder of head coaching success from one head coaching gig to another.

Wut? Did he really say that?
Was that a dig on Foley and UF?
