Not saying he's overrated.

The OP is somewhat misleading in its question.
My opinion: as a GAME CHANGER he was unquestionably one of the best of 2011. As a DEFENSIVE BACK, his skills weren't near the equal of his game changing ability.
I don't know if that makes sense, but as a DB, he had issues with his coverage abilities, and his height and attitude. I don't think LSU will have any problem with that loss.
But when he made big plays on defense, they were HUGE at times. That will be missed. On the other hand, I'd prefer not to be in the situation where you have to come up with big plays to save your skin. Boring play to play domination is far better.
I think offenses sort of figured him out a bit in the second half of last season as a DB. He got a little too out of control on the field as well.
But there is fan on this SEC board who wouldn't want him on their team. It's just a tragedy for the young man, but he's got a whole life ahead of him and if this is what it takes for him to get straight, it's worth it.

In terms of pass coverage? Sure.
Dude was a playmaker, pure and simple. He could strip the ball, wreak havoc and was a beast on special teams.
Did anyone argue he was the best cover corner in the history of LSU football or something?
But don't let me stop you from opportunistic trolling.
And props to State and holding us to fewer points than any team not named Alabama. Keep that up and you're on your way to victory #2 over us in 20 years.

He was among the best defensive/ST playmakers in college football last year.
Was he a great cover corner? no.
But nobody rated him high in that category.

The OP is filling the boat up with guys that usually know better than to respond to threads like this

We know Banks had a similar amount of turnovers as TM7. We get it.
However, Mathieu's plays were gamechanging. Charles Woodson won the Heisman in 1997, but there were a few guys who had more turnovers than he did. He just made his plays in big games and big times.
Oklahoma State had the most interceptions amongst DBs in the NCAA last year. Do you want their DBs?
Please stop the ignorant Banks shite.

He is a great playmaker. His coverage skills are less than perfect, and his size/speed/measurables were less than ideal, but his instincts and ability to create big plays were out of this world. Given the choice, I would MUCH rather have him this year than not. But c'est la vie, we will still be the best team in the nation this year.

TM was a great player. You'd have to be a fricking moron not to see that.

lol wut?
Sure TM7 is a more versatile player, but Banks is the superior DB.

Sure. I agree.
But as far as a college football player you'd want on your team (off the field issues aside), Mathieu is the guy.
