Why would Gus Malzahn make a good head coach?

To be honest, I don't see it. He's only had 1 good year with 1 good player. Do you know who else has had a good OC career and turned out to be a mediocre head coach? Dan Mullins. Mullins had Tebow/Harvin around to make him look good. Now what's he doing? He turned a crappy Miss St. team into a mediocre Miss St team. What makes you think old Gus can do any better? Especially running the spread in the SEC.

Premise 1 is incorrect.

That 2008 offense turned into a very good offense with Chris Todd at the helm.

Then you have a bad memory. He made Todd a decent QB, which was a miracle.

Don't know if he will be a good head coach, but if I'm Ole Miss, I stay away.

Seriously, Ole Miss needs to find a good defensive minded coach who will hire a good OC. Not the other way around.

***Course, they should have never gotten rid of Cutcliffe. Man that was a stupid decision.***

well, the only way i see him being any good is if he went to a boise state or tcu type team.

I guess you don't remember Darren McFadden and Felix Jones dominating the SEC in '06 as Arkansas went 10-2 and won the West. That was Malzahn.

Give it a rest. We're going to get that answer in the next 4 weeks, by the end of the season for sure. I would say like I did before, even before the season started, in the thread that keeps re-surfacing (not by me) his stock is certainly going to drop dramatically. I was about the only one saying that, but it's pretty fricking obvious now, ain't it Mr. Wizard?

Go look at AU's offensive statistics from 2009. AU didn't lead in a offensive categories, but was near the top in all of them.

Why do people think this?

I guess you could argue that Ole Miss was competitive under Tubs, but Ole Miss was also disastrous under Orgeron. As a program, Ole Miss is more suited to sustain success with a prolific offense (sorta like what Texas Tech has been able to do).

What makes you think we should have kept Cutcliffe? His biggest flaw, IMO, wasn't his X's and O's or necessarily his recruiting (which wasn't good, by the way), but rather his loyalty to very bad assistant coaches. He's a lot like Houston Nutt in those regards.

After our 4-7 season in 2004, he was asked to hire a new defensive coordinator. He refused and was fired for it.

Offense ranks:
2006 (Arkansas) - 20th (3rd in SEC)
2007 (Tulsa) - 1st
2008 (Tulsa) - 1st
2009 (Auburn) - 16th (2nd in SEC)
2010 (Auburn) - 7th (1st in SEC) ...iyo, his only good year
2011 (Auburn) - 77th currently

Just in his SEC years, he's had nationally top 20 offenses in 3 out of 4 years. Jury is still out on 2011.

Imagine if he turned out to be a great head coach. After 30 years, we could look back on his career and say, "This all happened because Mitch Mustain."

If we had moreplays, our ranking would be higher. Our offense avgs like 6 yards a play...but run 55 plays a game.
