A little off subject but my Dad always liked Johnny Majors. Why you ask?
My Dad was a State grad (1940) and Majors was an Assistant Coach at State from 1960-1963 and he was always very well liked in Starkvegas and w/MState fans in general.
So in turn I have always liked him as well.
I did not know the story about the Heisman so thanks for sharing it. I always enjoy learning more history about the SEC. Thumbs up from me.
An interesting fact about that '63 State team. We beat Auburn and had two ties (Florida/OM) and our only conference loss was a one point 19-20 to Bama. Basically we were one or two points away from being conference champions that year.
Johnny Majors was the DB coach on that team. Of course they won the famous ICE Bowl (Liberty Bowl) in PHL that year 16-12 over NC State. Jack Cristil's famous quote
"It was colder than a pawnbrokers heart" was from that day. Temp was 15 degrees during the game.

Thanks for sharing that. Johnny was a great man before his brother (who was a coach for UT got killed along with several others in a crash - traveling by train IIRC). He eventually hit the sauce and became a bit of a jerk. Post-sauce he's said to be a much better dude.
Through it all he was/is funny as hell. Spurrier had nothing on him and likely modeled himself after him to some degree.
Also, he was an OG Pimp:

In 1956, in college football, you bet your arse Johnny Majors was more revered than Jim Brown.
Jim Brown was a consensus AA.

It does when the award is supposed to go the player not the system. Change that aspect and I won't argue it but best player should mean just that. Otherwise, hand it to the coach.
If it is system based then Bo Wallace was a better qb than Eli Manning.

It was the biggest robbery in the history of the award.
Herschel in 80 could make a case here. It really is a shame it was staunchly not allowed to give to underclassmen back then. Hell in 1982 when HW finally did win it he was only the SEVENTH non-senior to ever win it. That's absurd.

He could, but he was a Freshman and they just didn't give the award to underclassmen back then. Not really a robbery
