Why isn’t the concept of static, geography-specific divisions obsolete?

With ease of travel and the amount of money involved in the modern game, why is the distance between schools in the same conference even a consideration?

Hell, for balance, you could reseed divisions (or pods) every single year based on the prior season's results.

For example:

Division 1:
1
3
5
7
9
11
13
15

Division 2:
2
4
6
8
10
12
14
16

Well traditional rivalries for one. I look forward to SEC west matchups more than any game

Also I personally know many lsu, Alabama, Auburn, ole Miss, Arkansas fans so that makes it fun. I don’t personally know any east team fans

You can go ahead and fill in 16. We all know who permanently will occupy that spot.

You can keep that as well. You get to keep two, if both teams agree. If they’re in the same division in any given year, great. If not, pick them up from the other division.

How is that balanced? Division 1 has better teams in each slot apparently.

Sure. You could go 1/16, 2/15, etc. The point remains a valid one…

The answer would probably be travel expenses for every single sport other than football.

When some of the poors like Rutgers and UCLA have to start traveling across the country to play each other in conference volleyball games, I imagine that it will start hurting the bottom line.

They kind of are. Most conferences are phasing them out.

Travel isn’t easy, especially for minor sports. It’s very expensive when you cannot bus to the location.

Because the most money is derived from distance and history

In state (Iron Bowl)
cross border (Ohio State Michigan)

Alumni and donors care most about these. College is based on distance way more than the NFL and to forget this is a sure way to kill the Golden goose.
