100M and the relays are the only things worth watching. Girls track suits are especially nice!

For the same reason no one really watches soccer outside of the World Cup.

These athletes are world-class and I consider them better athletes than any other sport.

Too much break in the action. Not enough rivalry. No bid-time announcers ginning things up.

Because it's boring as frick. I ran track for 6 years in grade school and thought it was boring as hell besides the minute forty I was on the track each meet.

Too much going on at same time makes it a difficult tv property to telecast. ESPN seems to be making an effort to showcase it more this year and the format of the finals was more conducive to tv as well.

This is a big part of it. Plus there are no real stars in college T&F right now to draw in the average viewer.

A number of reasons. It has team scoring, but it is an individual sport. A comparison is the team scoring used in collegiate golf, another "team" sport that doesn't generate a lot of fan excitement. Also, with T&F there are no games or standings to watch, no opposing teams or athletes to root against.

Track meets are all basically practice until you get to the big meets -- the conference and national events. All of this means there are very few anticipated matchups in the sport. Like this post, its dull stuff unless you are a stat nerd who likes keeping track of individual times or distances.

I watch some track and field on TV, but usually I can catch the good action on a google image search.

I can't argue with this although pole vaulter Allison Stokke looks pretty good regardless. It does illustrate another T&F problem.... this woman needs more exposure!!

Because Arkansas is good at it?

I bet lots more folks would tune in to watch Bert chase his wife around the track while stopping to snack on occasion.

What T&F really needs is a division where 300+ guys race around the track. Pretty sure the football crowd would tune into watch. Everybody loves it when a fat guy runs the football.

Seems like a much bigger deal...

You just spoke the truth of it: promotion. Track and Field lacks any promotion whatsoever outside of the Olympics which is promoted to hell and back.

Oregon and Arky dominate the distance races, and the SEC and maybe Florida State dominates the sprints. Florida has been winning the jumps it seems like forever.

Arkansas has dominated all aspects. Not just distance.

At on point, Arkansas was home to the worlds fastest man and fastest woman in the world, at the same time.

Good meets in person are a lot of fun. When they are run well, there is always something going on to watch. US stations do a terrible job of formatting it for TV, though. They'll show the 5K for 15 minutes, and then summarize the field events in 2-3 jumps or throws, if they even show anything. Most of the pro meets are in Europe and they do a much better job of showing everything and keeping the TV audience engaged by adjusting on the fly to focus on the best competitions at the moment.
