Why is the SECRant down on Will "BOOM" Muschamp at Auburn?

It seems like the SECRant is down on Will Muschamp because he was proven to be a mediocre Head Coach at Florida. Need I remind the rest of the SECRant that being a mediocre Head Coach doesn't mean he forget how to coach defense, after he has lead numerous defenses to outstanding numbers? He even had really good defenses at Florida, just bad to mediocre offenses. Why is he being called an overrated defensive coach?

A defense can be turned around really fast with the right hire. Look at Clemson, look at Ole Miss, look at Arkansas. All 3 of the aforementioned defenses were able to turn it around and become some of the best in college football in recent years. I'm not even saying Auburn will be as good as those defenses, as the offensive scheme almost never allows it (although it is possible).

I mean, look at the numbers of the defenses that Will Muschamp has coached... Only two defenses were ranked out of the top 20 in points per game given up...

2002 (LSU): 18.3 points per game, (not sure about ranking)
2003 (LSU): 11.3 points per game, #1 in NCAA
2004 (LSU): 17.1 points per game, #11 in NCAA
2006 (Auburn): 13.9 points per game, #6 in NCAA
2007 (Auburn): 18.1 points per game, #8 in NCAA
2008 (Texas): 18.8 points per game, #15 in NCAA
2009 (Texas): 16.7 points per game, #11 in NCAA
2010 (Texas): 23.7 points per game, #40 in NCAA
2011 (Florida): 19.3 points per game, 11th in NCAA
2012 (Florida): 15.7 points per game, 5th in NCAA
2013 (Florida): 20.6 points per game, 11th in NCAA
2014 (Florida): 22.7 points per game, 27th in NCAA

Do I expect him to turn around Auburn's defense in year 1? No. Do I expect Auburn's defense to make strides? Absolutely. There is too much talent on the defense and Will Muschamp is too good of a coach not to expect some strides to be made.

Looks like the trend there is that this year will be your best defense under muschamp and slowly get worse.

He's so good at defense he even kept Florida from scoring

I'm not looking forward to playing Auburn the next few years.

A better question is why do you need approval from an Internet message board?

The defenses got better in year 2, in some cases.

Exactly and he's never had to field a defense after a smoke and mirrors offense.

We have had no trouble scoring on his defenses.

So, at best, it's an unknown, right? A great defense can be fielded even if the offense is HUNH. Clemson just accomplished that feat with Chad Morris running the offense.

Gus Malzahn has no trouble scoring on Nick Saban and Kirby Smart. I guess it'll be a high scoring game.

SEC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ACC

Clemson was third in scoring defense in a down year for scoring defense (first was Ole Miss at 16.0).

I'll grant you that Clemson had a great secondary (and pass rush), but I wouldn't call their entire defense "great."

Well, yeah, but Clemson plays to their standards. And they have had no trouble beating the SEC lately... Auburn, LSU and South Carolina have all lost to them in recent years.

Damned good, especially considering the type of offense ran.

Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward were also drafted, as linebackers. Their defense was really outstanding in 2014.
