I think he is a good DC, but he also has had the benefit of some shitty arse ball control offenses that would kill clock and shorten the game.

I think most of the questions are about the players, not Muschamp. Yes, there are tons of stars from recruiting services, but some of those guys have looked incompetent on defense. The point seems to be more about the fact that Will might be trying to polish a bunch of turds.

I don't agree, but I think that's where most of the questions come from here.

Not sleeping on anybody, he's a great defensive mind and he'll do well at Auburn.

this is true but he still is gonna have a good defense just might be hard to end up in the top 20 with aubs style of play

another area he left a little to be desired was blitzing he had no creativity what so ever there but he put 3 first round dl's in the draft so what do i know

There are other stats you should be looking at. Boom is a pretty good DC, no doubt. If your offense continues to decline though, it won't matter a whole lot how well he can improve your defense though.

Auburn's average yards per game against SEC foes was roughly 35 yards more in 2014 than 2013.

Yes, but your scoring offense was 35.5 per game in 2014 compared to 39.5 per game in 2013. Also, keep in mind that in 2014 you had 27 turnovers compared with only 19 in 2013. Those additional 8 turnovers helped you in scoring of course. Take those away and your scoring drops to around 30 per game which would have knocked you out of the top 50 in the nation.

So, like I said, there are a lot of other statistics to factor in.

2013 (Florida): 20.6 points per game, 11th in NCAA
2014 (Florida): 22.7 points per game, 27th in NCAA

So basically Muschamp made our defense worse than it was prior to his arrival in Gainesville?

Is that supposed to be impressive on some level?

Also see that jump to 20 ppg post 2012? Yeah that occurs after a much, much better defensive coach than Muschamp left the program. Doubt that statement, look at the contrasting career trajectories of Boom and the man who left in December of 2012- Dan "I can even make Muschamp look like a coach" Quinn.

So, at best, it's an unknown, right? A great defense can be fielded even if the offense is HUNH. Clemson just accomplished that feat with Chad Morris running the offense.

They played to their strength on defense. Much like Ole Miss in 2014. Clemson wasn't nearly as explosive on offense in 2014, as the two previous seasons.

I think that's the question with Auburn. Will Malzahn dial it back when the various pieces to the puzzle suggest that he should?

Exactly and he's never had to field a defense after a smoke and mirrors offense.

We have had no trouble scoring on his defenses.

Interesting. Gus has had no trouble scoring on your defense.

In his first two years (you always like to exclude 2010) he has accumulated 1023 yds and 66 pts. Last year, the Tigers scored 44 points, rolled up 630 total yards -- the most ever gained against an Alabama defense. Oh right, that was garbage points.

We have definitely seen an improvement in recruiting with Will, I suspect we may see an improvement in defense.

Can't wait to find out

I am not down on Boom at all. I do feel he will get another head coaching gig and won't be at Auburn more than a year or two though

I like how you just disregard 5 years of his coaching teams against UGA.

Are you just making up statistics now?
quote:

ut your scoring offense was 35.5 per game in 2014 compared to 39.5 per game in 2013.
Now you conveniently look at turnovers (and make up some crazy stat about it) yet failed to look at the number of punts forced by the defense. Consider this, Auburn forced 76 punts in 2013 and just 59 in 2014. Auburn's 4th down defense also went from 46% in 2013 to 60% in 2014. Both stats which show that the defense failed to give the ball back to the offense as much in 2014 as they did in 2013.

Also, you failed to look at vs conference (which is the important stat here, no one cares how much you pound Rice).

VS conference it was 38.4 to 34.4, which includes defensive/special teams scores.

Take out the defensive/special teams scores, and it reads as follows...

2014 - 33.4 ppg
2013 - 35.7 ppg

Turnover Margin vs Conference

2014: -2 (14 gained, 16 lost)
2013: -2 (12 gained, 14 lost)

ETA: dropping 59 points on Mizzou has a way of skewing the statistics in a big way. Auburn averaged 33.1 ppg in SEC play headed into Atlanta.

Ellis Johnson was a highly respected and well sought after dc as well.Maybe it's not muschamps ability as a dc that's being questioned, rather his ability to be successful at a program with a dog and pony show style offense.
