I read somewhere it's because back in the horse and buggy days, it was common for MSU to be used on everything as an abbreviation for the university (Missouri State University). Pronounce MSU, and you see where Mizzou came from.

Things evolved, and MSU is no longer the proper abbreviation. But the old abbreviation lives on in the nickname.

Goes way back to days of being called Missouri State University and MSU.....sounds like MIZZOU

Anyway, catchy moniker and distinctive from all the other M Universities around the country, don't you think?
