Why is FL HC McElwain getting no respect?

Just saw Sporting News has him ranked 6th in the SEC behind Arkansas' HC Bret Bielema.

The Athlon Sports College Football rankings had him as the 8th best coach in the SEC.

The guy wins the SEC East in his first year and coaches at Florida. They have tons of talent yet he isn't seen as a higher rated coach. My question is, what am I missing here with this guy?

They're looking at the 2nd half of the last season. That was not the same Florida team that played Tennessee, Ole Miss, and even LSU.

I kinda think the criticism is unfair, but I understand it.

He was SEC coach of the year and a finalist for AP coach of the year.
If I was a Gator fan my only concern would be his recruiting so far (not bad but not up to the usual standards under Meyer and even Muschamp).

Especially the Michigan game and he hasn't exactly lit it up on the recruiting trail.

Meh. It's not like their bowl game actually meant anything.

Agree. The 2nd half of he season is reflected here. He is a good fit for FL and should have them playing for east titles.

V&S is right. I would add that these preseason magazines seem to put tremendous stock in what happened in bowl season. Because Michigan blew out Florida, they're now a favorite for the national title. Just like a lot of magazines had Oklahoma as preseason #1 in 2014 following their Sugar Bowl win over Bama.

Yeah I've been curious as well with this. IMO Muschamp is killing it at USCe which blows my mind.

No one's ever questioned Muschamp's recruiting ability.

I don't think you can question it when he was at Florida taking over a dominant team, or question the ability to recruit defensive players at Auburn. But as a head coach at USCe who would honestly want to play for him. It still blows my mind that USCe even hired the dude.

No idea why but Gator fans don't worry about this kind of stuff. None of my Gator friends talk about these types of lists.

Too busy comparing Crocs.

I think this coming season is a pivotal one for Mac. I have no idea how UF will do with UT or UGA but I do like the sleeper effect the team has going. IMHO I think Mac is going to turn out similar to Billy the kid who recruited lesser rated kids and got great results out of them in the end.

He's on offensive coach and their offense was terrible. Their success was all from defense last year

Treon Harris was beyond horrible.

This is an understatement and so were the kickers. I may still question Macs recruiting and some decisions but Grier really screwed that team over. 8 wins and I'll be happy if the offense clicks. ?S all over the offensive side of the ball.

I think a lot of it has to do with his recruiting and how the team finished the year. The team was horrible at the end of the year because we had no QB and coach Mac would not change the offense to suit the athlete we had playing QB. Last year he had to play with Muschamps QBs and now he has got his own so that wouldn't be a big issue. The recruiting is what is concerning.

UF was in a tough spot last year. UF was looking formidable on offense under Grier, and he was improving throughout the year. Then out of nowhere he gets suspended indefinitely and McElwain is forced to play Treon, who doesn't fit what McElwain wants to do at all on offense. Then UF looks bad pretty much the entire back half of the year. It was a direct correlation with the offense and QB more specifically, unfortunately for McElwain and the programs perception right now.
