This has really been lost in the whole Miles firing: A last second loss to Auburn, and we're firing our coach. I'm not saying I disagree from the standpoint of how our offense was playing, but everybody acts like we lost to freaking Nicholls State (yes, that was a jab at UGA). We lost AT AUBURN, a game that is always down to the wire, no matter how good or bad LSU or Auburn are. Since 2004, the scores at JHS in this series are 10-9 AU, 7-3 AU, 26-21 LSU, 24-17 AU, 12-10 LSU and we won't talk about 2014.

Auburn's defense has been playing at a high level this year, holding the mighty Clemson Tigers to 19 points and playing a tight one against A&M until Trayveon Williams busted an 89 yarder late in the 4th against a gassed Auburn D. Auburn's two losses were hard fought losses to teams currently ranked 3 and 9. Yes, Malzahn's O is not at the elite levels of 2013-14, but the D is so much better than it was then. If Malzahn can get some life out of that O going forward, I can see them beating another team or two that everyone will be surprised about. Ole Miss perhaps? Arkansas? UGA? Probably not Bama. Probably Alabama A&M though.

They apparently sucked bad enough to warrant losing to them in the last second was worth firing a tenured coach with multiple top 10 finishes and a national title.

That was years in the making. It was the last straw.

i would assume it's because their coach is supposed to be the offensive genius and given their offense he's looked anything but genius level the past 2 seasons.

Because Kevin Steele is the best coach on their staff

Surprisingly not for the reasons many of us expected. Most thought AU would be 8-4, which they are on path to be. We thought the O would be strong and the D would struggle.

Steele has had the D playing salty, while Gus Red Zone Malzahn has flip flopped on how he wants to approach his job. First it's be a CEO (last year), then it's be more hands on b/c "I'm a football coach" (in May), now he's back to CEO b/c he was "living and dying with every play".

I think AU has the talent to win 6 no problem. To win 8 or more they'll need their O to step it up. That's why people are negative on them.

I haven't notice people are particularly negative on AU. A lot of people thought we would struggle and our optimists topped out at like 8-4/9-3. Many thought it'd be a lot worse.

Obviously the offense has been puzzling. But from what I've seen this team hasn't quit and has the talent to hang in most games, so it isn't really like 2012. More like the mediocrity we've seen recently, but hopefully building to something a little better.

There is a lot of season to play, but if Auburn can get to 8-4, I think that would probably exceed what most non-AU posters expected.

Apparently he was the best coach on the staff he was on last year, too.

The best thing LSU fans butters up is the perception of its opponents.

Auburn fans have been more down on Auburn than anyone, IMO.

I've seen a solid defense and damn good special teams so far. They have red-zone issues and maybe with Gus stepping away from the day to day Lashlee/Hand/Burns will be able to stabilize the offense and get some better production out of them. I'm thinking 8-4 is very possible.

If anyone would be surprised at us beating either of these teams, they haven't been watching much football this year.
