1 repeatedly.
I've never understood why they didn't play each other in basketball. Football I kinda get.
FWIW: UAB has a lot of talent on campus. If one were inclined towards non-white hot chicks, there's a ton of em down there.

Because we're afraid they'll beat us, and we don't want them to.

I think Bama should play UAB every year

Because we might lose. You might consider the same strategy against Toledo in football.

Bama skirt to play any team with Alabama in their name.

Gene Bartow. I don't understand how people don't know this, or don't want to know.
Gene Bartow had a great team in 1981. He got just a tad haughty. Bama fans had been filling up the BJCC with UAB fans during the early years.
Bartow got big for his britches and went on a rant about how things were done at Alabama. Particularly with Bobby Lee Hurt. Truth or not, the comments have never been forgotten by Alabama brass nor has it been forgotten by people like me.
I wouldn't give UAB the parking money from one of our games. We wanted to help, their big mouth coach couldn't keep his mouth shut so we said screw you.
Next thing you know they aren't filling the BJCC and move to the tiny confines of Bartow arena. It also kileed ANY chance of them playing us in any major sport. UAB did this, Bama had nothing to do with the ill will that started with Mr. Bartow and his loose lips. Nobody's afraid of anybody. Is simply a coach who was in no position to spew at the mouth. We've given them way more handouts tan I would have had I been calling the shots.
They needed us and we didn't need them.
That little fact got lost on the Southside somewhere in 81 and is haunting them to this very day.
At that point UAB was focused on being a basketball only Urban campus and din't see football being an entity down the road. Mr. Bartow was unaware of the damage he had done not only to the basketball program but he basically made sure the football program would be an also-ran.
Lots of younger people want to play them and it will happen one day but I will never in a million years give UAB a basketball game much less a football game. And ALL because of Gene Bartows statements and the spewing that campus has done over the years in regards to the main campus. What does UAB think? pissing us off is gonna get us to play you? They are a stupid lot when it comes to getting deals done, I'll say that. Whether they like it or not we hold the aces. We can or don't have to play them. In anything. They need to shut up and be very, very nice to us. Maybe one day we'll forgive. If they keep shooting off at the mouth, they are just making their situation worse. If they don't want to and keep spewing their venom, then fine, don't complain about your situation that YOUR leaders and supporters have helped create.

There is no us and them, both schools are part of the same system. It's incredibly retarded to take this posture towards playing UAB as they're a natural rival in many sports that's a very short and convenient commute between campuses. They also are tied at the hip to the University of Alabama system, and failing to help their programs thrive also costs the system more money. It's absolutely insane that we paid schools like MTSU, UL-M, and Charleston over a a million dollars versus keeping the money within the same system.
One of the most disappointing things of Coach Saban's tenure @ Alabama to me has been his unwillingness to use his influence to end that detente with UAB by some of old guard who had their feelings hurt 35 years ago. There is no logical reason to continue this refusal to schedule UAB

Most people probably are more interested in an internet "troll" than a in-depth back story but your post really spells out the "bad blood" from the Gene Bartow days.
Bartow came in from UCLA with quite an attitude and perhaps thinking he was going to "put a fence" around Birmingham, which was in a golden era of producing talents like Whatley, Bobby Lee Hurt and Buck Johnson. Wimp Sanderson continued to get those players to Tuscaloosa and Bartow made quite a stink about it. I believe he even sent letters to the NCAA requesting investigations.
Like you said, UAB sports had everything to gain long from a "friendly rivalry" considering the support the program was getting from Birmingham area folks that were Alabama fans first.

What a ridiculous argument. How much do you think we would pay UAB to play us? I'd wager it would be less than $750k. UAB would make over a million by travelling OOS to play someone.
Personally, I don't care if we ever play them. Once Bill Clark leaves, I wouldn't care if they get shut down again.

quote:This is an accurate post. I was around there back then and know the disdain that Bartow and Alabama athletics had for each other. Also, during that time the majority of Alabama alumni living in B'ham considered Tuscaloosa just an inconvenient place for them to have their campus....hell, they were already playing all their important home games in B'ham anyway, and that attitude didn't resonate well around the rest of the state.
