But the problem is, the Northwestern game is brought up by our opponents fans more than it is brought up by us. Most of us agree that NW wasn't deserving of their ranking (they werent). But we don't set the schedule, we play who we play, and we dominated them. You can try and spin that into a bad thing all you want. But lately UT has had a problem with playing down to opponents levels. So seeing that was a whole lot better than a bowl game like UF for example, where they just got worked.

I agree, Northwestern was overrated.
However, they still upset a very good Stanford team. They still finished the regular season #12 and made it to the Outback Bowl.
Tennessee fans are excited about this, not because we blew out a slightly above-average team, but because we finally looked like a sound, well-disciplined unit. We finally came together as a team in that Outback Bowl win. The puzzle pieces have all fallen into place, and the team chemistry appeared to reach a whole new level.
Regardless of how good or bad Northwestern was last year, not many teams would have routed them the way we did. Some, yes, but not many. That same team that was jiving against NW returns 17 starters and a lot of momentum coming into 2016. Additionally, we finally have experienced depth in the two-deep rotation, something we have not had in many years.

True, nobody claimed Northwestern was a juggernaut, but the preseason hype for Tennessee has reached unreal levels, and some of us are scratching our heads to try to figure out the root of it. And it did seem to ratchet up after the win over Northwestern. So while claiming Northwestern was a juggernaut may not have been verbally stated, it certainly seems to have been implied.
It boils down to this: Does Tennessee return more than most any other team in college football? Yes. Did those starters last year prove they had what it takes to compete for championships? Absolutely not. Will they have what it takes to compete for championships this year? Maybe, but until they prove it by winning a big SEC game, I think there is very little reason for hype.
I've picked UT to win the East this year. But it probably has more to do with the fact that Georgia, South Carolina, and Missouri all have first year coaches.... and I think Florida takes a step back this year, and UT gets them in Knoxville very early. So I think UT is the projected East champ by default more so than because they'll be extremely good.

Keep in mind, this team was 17 points away from being undefeated. Obviously, they weren't a championship caliber team last season, but it's not like we were light years away from it.
If this team has learned how to finish games, they'll win the East going away. I think we have the pieces in place, I think we hired the right DC. If we can't get it done this season, then Butch Jones is not the right man for the job, period.

How did the players not prove that on the field? We had four combined losses for 17 points. Those players return with another year of experience under their belts. A questionable defensive call against Florida on 4th and 14 cost us the game. A solid drive by Alabama when we were up 6 minutes remaining in the fourth lost us that game, and Alabama ended up winning the National Championship. Lack of depth against Oklahoma, another playoff contender, cost us the game in double overtime. Arkansas... no excuses there; we were just flat and deflated. Regardless, I think our players have definitely proven they can compete with the best... if anything, the better question is, Have the coaches proven they have what it takes to compete for championships? That is what we'll have to wait and see, but if they prove it this year, the players and talent is waiting in the stable.

Beating NW was better than losing to them. It starts this year with a six game winning streak. Surely it helped with recruiting.
The Media has done a lot of hype for UT. They have to write -something-.
After the way we lost those 4 games last year not many Vol fans are taking anything for granted.
I think we start 5-0 but there are no gimme's there. We have the Herbstreit curse. He thinks we beat Bammer and lose to LSU in the SECCG.

Is it really different than putting LSU at 5 after folding against the best teams they played last season? Or having a 7-6 Washington team at 14? UGA at 18 with QB questions and 2 RBs that are not guaranteed %100, not to mention an entirely new coaching staff? Its a preseason poll, we know we have a complete team with some great weapons on it (we haven't had this many players on preseason lists since I can remember). We have had recruiting classes in the past few years which put our talent level on par with the level we need to be to compete for the SEC. We have depth and experience at every position. The talent is there, we just have to finish, so maybe the hype is a little unwarranted. But the same can be said for many highly ranked teams, especially when no games have been played. The example I go back to is OU 2014, they lost a few close games to good teams, returned a lot of people, and then went to the CFP next season. The hype is there, we don't know if its real or not until about 4-5 weeks from now.

I'm not sold on our coach. I never saw him learn from his mistakes of taking his foot off the petal. When Butch gets a lead he runs one or two plays and prays to God our defense can stop the other team. We cannot win doing this and BUTCH cost us every close game last year with his conservative coaching approach.

What we know about the Demo Party email leaks is that the DNC and Clinton came up with a message and focused on it, and yes even briefed people in the Mainstream Media on it.
My point is to not talk politics. Yeeek. We don't have politics any more.
My point -- is that this year, "Are the Vols going to do it this year?" is a theme that was picked up on a lot of different fronts in the Sports world and it got lots of play. There really doesn't have to be a definite basis for it.
I think many UT fans would be glad to forego the hype too.

This dude gets it. It's really not that hard to understand. Yeah maybe they were overrated, but they still are the same team that beat Stanford, Wisconsin and Penn State. They may not have been 12, but they were a solid team, and we kicked their teeth in.

For some reason everyone on this website is pissed at us because every college football outlet is ranking us high. I dont get what the hell we did? Was northwestern over ranked? Possibly, would beating them 90 - 0 have satisfied the rant? Florida is the favorite on here by alot of fans, how is us throttling northwestern not good for us but florida getting butt raped by michigan good?
