This x 1000.

As an Aggies, we have very few sidewalk, or t-shirt fans as we call them. However we constantly deal with t-shirt tsips that don't know shite about football, basketball, any other sport, and anything about either university.

What's even worse is when you see these conservative, pro-military, pro gun rights folks bag on A&M and talk shite about tu. And they have no idea that tu is one of the most liberal and anti military public schools in the nation. That is why they want to be with UCLA and Berkley.

Cooter: it is even more hilarious when they buy tu gear in Mexico that is misspelled and they wear it.

Texas tries to have a different image for the football program (cowboys) than the university (liberal elite). When you go to a game it is all cows and kitsch country (yeehaw).

Heck one of their biggest donors is a T-shirt fan that bought into that shite so it works, good for them. I would think all the vote for Wendy Davis signs and bumper stickers around the stadium would give it away, but I guess that was wishful thinking.

The finge and tassles on their polyester cowboy outfits should also give it away.

I doubt that fans who never went to a university are more rabid than alums. Maybe it's been conducted but if a survey was presented to see how many Ranters are alums it would probably be over 50% which is a lot when you consider how many people are available to sign up for the Rant and we all know there's some crazy fricks on here.
Personally I did not attend MU but had family who did. I'm a fan because my dad was a huge fan and it's imprinted in my sports memories from my youth along with the St Louis Cards (both baseball and football) and in the 60's/70's became fans of the Chiefs and Royals.

I went to LSU and fly the flags and put magnets on the car for game day. On travel days I wear purple and gold to represent wherever I'm flying around the world. And the great thing is that I have run into other LSU fans in airports around the world and you can always spot them representing their LSU gear. Am I to assume that all of these international travelers are poor sidewalk fans?

bullshite. Given the population of Texas, A&M probably has more than most.

I know it is common for fans of the "other" or black sheep schools in a state to boast about not having any non-grad fans, but it's total bullshite. You're a big state U, not some unheard of small DIII college.

Actually, you don't know what you are talking about. This state is different. tu has a vast majority of the sidewalk fans in the state, and we actually have very few.

This is just reality for us.

Tech might have more sidewalk fans then A&M given the West Texas people that hate Austin and everything east.

Look, I'm not saying you have as many as Texas. But you certainly do have more than Ole Miss or your average SEC school, if for no other reason that state population. You're fooling yourself if you believe A&M gear isn't sold at Walmarts from one end of the state to another.

I've got no issue with you trying to pretend A&M doesn't have many sidewalks, whatever. Just don't expect anyone else to believe it.

The dynamics and demographics of this state are completely different than any other SEC state.

A&M gear can't be found in over half the Wal-Marts in the state, and it was less than a fourth before JFF.

I've read quite a few posts from people who have grown attached to a university over a lifetime. With LSU, it is rooted into generations of people across Louisiana because it is part of the culture. Walk the campus on a Saturday morning and you will come across people who have been tailgating for 20, 30, 40 years. I graduated from LSU and remember the RV parking lots starting to fill on a Friday afternoon. Many of those people never attended LSU. I wouldn't consider them any less a fan than myself.

If all of us alumni were as committed as we pretend, we wouldn't see so many empty seats in our stadiums, basketball arenas, and baseball fields. If you really want to measure someone's loyalty and commitment to a school, look at the crowd during a game when the conditions are awful.

I can force myself to get out to a deer stand or duck blind when the weather conditions are miserable. I'll also admit that, when the conditions are bad, I'd choose to watch an LSU football game from my home. Some fans are as passionate about LSU football as I am about hunting. I really don't care if they graduated from LSU or not. They are better LSU fans than I am and a degree doesn't change that.

Why do Old Miss fans act as if Old Miss has no sidewalk fans on here? Never mind the fact that I have yet to meet an Old Miss graduate (perhaps it's due in large part to the fact that their enrollment is a fraction of the size of almost all of the other SEC universities) despite having met grads from every other SEC school, including State, but each time I've passed through that third world country that makes Alabama look like the Emerald City, every Rebel supporter/creature I've seen is a cast off from the Hills Have Eyes movie. That and it's always fun to visit the Old Miss groups and pages on Facebook for further evidence.

It probably has something to do with fewer IQ points. (I'm not saying all non-alum are dumb, they just have a lot more comparatively - like UA compared to the rest of college football).

1. Uneducated people tend to work less, have lower wages, and therefore fewer hobbies, interests, and things to spend their time on. Therefore their full energy is devoted to being fans. See Harvey Updyke.

2. I can speak from this personally. Alums get extremely cheap and easy access to games for 4-8 years during college. That spoils you and makes it much harder to convince yourself to drive to the game, get an overpriced hotel, pay 250 bucks for a ticket, and then drive back in traffic. I care much less about Alabama football now than I did 7 years ago.

Agreed...priorities change. I'd add that college graduates are more likely to move to other areas of the country and will become detached over time.

Have you ever been in Texas for longer than a couple days? I mean, what do you KNOW? I've lived here for more than 30 years. I've lived in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, and have family and do bidness in Dallas. Everyone here who didn't go to A&M, Tech, TCU, Baylor, or SMU (and even some of those) is a Longhorn fan. The Horns have casual, bandwagon, t-shirt, and "sidewalk" famdom on LOCK. A&M is an insular culture that is profoundly weird and uninviting to outsiders and the Horns have name, history, and logo advantages on us when it comes to the general Texas public.
