He performed very average, but has potential. It was his first year getting decent PT.

To be fair, if he develops some touch on the deep ball he could be very good.

I have seen enough of him to believe that he is not too far away from being absolutely lethal. He was on for parts of the Bama game that made me covet him. Just needs some consistency and he will be an NFL starter.

As I said before, if he develops some touch on the deep ball he could be very good.

This. He's usually pretty average, with some flashes of being really good. Just that is a dimension we haven't had in, it seems like, forever.

And if Murray remembered what color his team was and had ice water running through his veins he'd have won a heisman by now

He definitely has the "arm talent", as they like to say. It's the touch on deep balls and his pocket presence that needed some work. Hopefully Cam can help him there. He definitely isn't scared to stand tall and throw in when under pressure.

Yeah because he has no chance at improving on the deep ball.

It's almost like he is the white QB version of Duron carter. Except he has finally played a game.

He throws a flat deep ball. It's correctable, just a little arc on the ball. He would have thrown for over 3,000 if he just connected on half the deep ones he missed. My main concern isn't the deep ball, but touch on the intermediate throws. WR drops really hurt his stats last year.

Yeah it's hard to judge him on the mid range throws because of all the drops he had to deal with last year, but from what I remember he seemed to stick many of the 15-20 yard throws in there pretty nicely. He definitely has the are strength to put it where it needs to be.

Why do people think Zach Mettenberger is a good quarterback?

meh, had a career game, and he shite the bed when it mattered most.

No, that would be John Chavis and the freshman Jalen who replaced the earlier-injured Eric Reid for the last drive who lined up wrong on most of the last drive.
Also, had Mettenberger been allowed to throw on the 2nd to last drive from the Alabama 28 instead of handing off three straight times, the game would have ended differently.
Or, had Alleman made the 45 yard FG for a 20-14 lead, Bama would not have gotten the ball at the 28 and more time would have run off.

For the same reasons that Carolina fans think that Connor Shaw/Dylan Thompson are good quarterbacks

My main problem is he didn't seem to be up for certain games against scrubs (Towson, Auburn, Ole Miss, Arkansas) and really wasn't into the game. Only showed up in big games.

Bama's plan was to stop the LSU ground game. When you play a great team you pick your poison. To the Bama coaches, and they eluded to this, if you stopped LSU's run you stopped them or slowed them down enough to win. That is going to leave open a big game possibility throwing wise but a chance Bama was willing to take and indeed only gave up an average of 2.8 yds a carry. Bama, to their credit didn't change the gameplan when it got behind and LSU called exactly what they thought they would call the final 3 plays or so of the missed FG drive. Then after the Bama score Mettenberger throws 2 dumpoffs that don't get out of bounds and got hardly any yardage then takes a sack on 3rd. He should have been firing that ball downfield with nothing to lose a la Brett Favre. Great QB's aren't great all the time. Just when they need to be.
Yes he got big numbers that night but Bama didn't show up at that game to stop Mettenberger to begin with and ultimately the gameplan worked.
I think he's a pretty good player though. Not a guy that can carry a team but pretty good. Remember too, this was first season to play in a while. He should show marked improvement after a season of being on the field.
