I can answer for me and my peers only. Growing up in the 70's and 80's there were 2 teams that could beat us in conference. UT and AU. Look at the all-time records and they are the closest to us in terms of wins. We are not separated by 20,25 or 35 wins like most other SEC teams are with us.
It's a border rivalry. We vacation in the smokies and they vacation at Gulf Shores.
LOTS of UT grads live in Huntsville and Birmingham.
LOTS of Bama alums live in Memphis and Nashville.
I mean by the tens of thousands.
My office alone has 3 UT grads and I have 5 UT house flags flying in my neighborhood. Our office in Nashville has about 10 Bama grads in it.
You add all of these up and you get this game because we annoy each other with our gloating after the win which causes hate.
It is like AU. You're not happy you won, you're RELIEVED you didn't lose. Very, very intense because you don't want them to catch you in all-time wins and you have to live with these people. Same with AU. It's a game where you don't sleep much the week of.
It's a border rivalry. We vacation in the smokies and they vacation at Gulf Shores.
LOTS of UT grads live in Huntsville and Birmingham.
LOTS of Bama alums live in Memphis and Nashville.
I mean by the tens of thousands.
My office alone has 3 UT grads and I have 5 UT house flags flying in my neighborhood. Our office in Nashville has about 10 Bama grads in it.
You add all of these up and you get this game because we annoy each other with our gloating after the win which causes hate.

I love this part. It's one of the things I try to explain about our rivalry with tech, since people think it shouldn't even be a big deal since we beat them so much. when you win that's great and all, but you're much happier that you didn't lose.

Phatimus struck a deal with the NCAA to be a "secret witness" against Alabama in return for immunity against the cheating they had done. Karma got them in the end.
There is no denying that some shady stuff was going on in the SEC back then when it came to recruiting(probably more so than now). Alabama was certainly a part of it. Phatimus(Fat Phil Fulmer) and Houston Nutt were both just as guilty as Bama was. Roy Kramer didnt help things either.
In the end, Phatimus and Nutt both got theirs
