What did the "SEC" have to do with letting Arkansas into the conference? Hint - it has to do with the Fraternity-of-the-Big-Red "A."

Alabama allowed Arkansas in to beat up LSU, Mississippi (when needed), Tennessee (on occasion) and any other team that needs a loss to insure Alabama wins the West. They in turn agreed to play a close game occasionally against Alabama so that the rest of the teams don't get suspicious, but they are strictly prohibited from actually winning a game against the Tide.

That is Arkansas' only job, act as Alabama's wing man ... and it is the reason they were allowed in. So far it has worked out well.

I could tell you the agreement Alabama has with South Carolina and Florida about Georgia to keep the doggies down. But actually, so far it hasn't been much of a problem when Georgia wins the East.

Yeah, because South Carolina was let in because of their football prestige

So no real answers? Sad.

The reason is because every expansion has a different priority OP. In the expansion before last the SEC looked to move west and Arky did that. Plus quite frankly their program was a bigger deal in 1992.

I agree with OP. Arky tries way too hard to fit in. Kick them and Mizzou out and let's get back to 12 teams.

Trying to fit in? Expound. I make no effort to be more "southurrrn" than I already am by association.

The SEC is pretty much all I know. We've been in the SEC West for as long as there has been an SEC West.

Frank Broyles was a well respected AD nation wide and had a good bit of clout. He had our athletics, football, basketball, baseball and track,on a decent to high level.

Our fan base was rabid and traveled and supported the teams. And coming from the SWC without all the cheating baggage was a plus.

I'll always be grateful to Frank for getting us away from that crap hole conference....

Top 25 program in Football
Top 15 in basketball
Top 20 in baseball
#1 in Track
Last in softball

Great college town. Plenty of rednecks. Hot girls. Dumb fans who call in to talk radio every day. Vacation at Orange Beach.

I think we fit in fine.

Because FSU chickened out and Texas wouldn't let A&M leave the SWC.

That is more the reasoning of why South Carolina got added and not why Arky was added.

Arky was number 11 for a reason- they were the program worth expanding for.

Decades from now people will say Missouri is in the SEC because "Texas chickened out and OSU wouldn't let OU dump them." Events get boiled down over time.

The SEC Big 6 needed to pad stats given the Hogs win just one in three games (.34% win vs B6) since they joined the conference.
