I can't find the story through google, but he resigned after Ronald Steele left and that was the rumor as to what happened. He was also caught with a coed on a golf course. I remember it being reported when it happened.

Pretty sure he had some problems with AAU coaches as well. Getting Bledsoe and or Cousins probably would've saved his job.

Great player that Gottfried ran into the ground. Averaged OVER 40 minutes per game one year, I believe.

That's not true, wasn't a players gf. I know the Gottfrieds well. Our kids are good friends,. Not saying he didn't screw around but I know it wasn't a players gf.

I have read this a lot, I have known Mark since he moved to Mobile for his Sr year at UMS. I have always liked him.

People say that who have never met him personally but heard it on the Web somewhere, don't like him cause he's and ex coach and it makes them feel cool to talk down on someone who's successful,

He better have changed, because his wife threatened him with quite a bit. Not only was she going to beat his butt(she's not a small lady) but with all those kids, she was going to take everything that he had or ever hoped to have. When it was made public knowledge that he was cheating, she had all the proof that she needed to nail him and good.
He was such a jerk and I am personally glad that he is gone. He really had become to think that he was quite the ladies' man, and forgot that he was not the same age as these students. He really made a fool of himself.

The girl was a Kappa. Her picture was floating around at the time as well.
Gottfried got to the point where he was blatantly showing up at Innsifree at night and drinking excessively and flirting with college girls.

Please, please, please don't fall victim to tRant's "Bama fired a great coach" narrative.
Gottfried's career SEC record at Bama was 83-82, he had winning conference records in only 3 of 10 full seasons, and he advanced beyond the round of 32 exactly ONCE in five trips to the NCAA tourney.
At NC State, he's an improvement over Lowe just as he was an improvement over Hobbs at Bama but thus far at NC State he's not doing anything Lowe's predecessor didn't do too.
The only differences in Grant and Gottfried's tenures is that the SEC got more committee respect and thus more invites when Gottfried was coaching at Bama. One of Mark's NCAA teams had a 17-12 overall/7-9 SEC record and the Elite 8 team was only 8-8 in the SEC.
Grant had teams go 12-4 and 12-6 in the league and still get sent to the NIT.

Gottfried's current NC State teams are very similar to his good Alabama teams. Streaky, can beat anyone and lose to anyone, always seem to be around the bubble, etc.
His last 3 seasons in Tuscaloosa were nothing like that. We went from average to bad to awful and halfway during year 3 he was fired (with very good reason). My guess is he went back, reevaluated things and got his mojo back when he went to Raleigh. Good for him.
