And why was it as simple as a few years off to get it back? He isn't a great coach by any means, but if you're satisfied with consistently making the tournament he's got it locked down.

His teams constantly under-performed and then he slept with a player's girlfriend.

After his Elite Eight run at Bama and the #1 ranking that same year, both of which had never been accomplished at Bama, he thought he had a job for life. He got very complacent, arrogant, and lazy. And he started screwing co-eds. That was a deadly combination that got his arse fired as soon as the team started slipping big time. That, and the fact that he couldn't win an SEC road game if his life depended on it!!

The wreck of the golf cart on the back nine sealed the deal. It was just too much For Mal to overlook.

I thought when we fired him, and believe me I was more for it than anyone, we couldn't hire a worse overacheiver.

Thanks Tony

Wow. Did not know that. So do you think he changed at NC State or do they just not care?

These didn't happen in the same season, unless you mean we made the Elite Eight in March and got to #1 in November.

Both achievements were flukes. We barely made the tournament the year we made the Elite Eight. We only got to be #1 because we had a shitty non-conference schedule and everyone ahead of us lost. Hell, the first game we played as #1 we lost to Utah. We also barely made the tournament that season.
