I know Spurrier has said recently that he feels good and could see himself coaching for a few more years. With that said, is his replacement already on staff?... is his son a reasonable candidate?

He's laying a pretty impressive foundation in Columbia, and whoever takes over should have the tools necessary to compete at a high level.

I say Spurrier, JR.

(can't wait to see USCe fans' thoughts on that)

What about Lorenzo ward? Defense seems to be what has made USCe into a contender, not their offense. I would say Ellis Johnson, but I think his lone year at Southern Miss put a slight damper on that.

I'd guess Ward. I don't think they have the power to draw a big name but maybe they get a hot shot up and comer whenever it happens. If Ward stays and does well I'd suspect he would be the top candidate.

it would also be incentive enough for him to stay... i'm sure others have and will try to hire him.

What about Strong if he's still at UL?

I would be thrilled with Ward, tbh.

It's been said that the D players absolutely love the guy, he's had a knack for making great second half adjustments and I like his aggressive style.

Strong makes sense b/c he coached there, but, IMO, no... with UL's move to the ACC and him turning down UT, I don't see him leaving for another college job. The NFL could make a run at him in the future, though.

Well... if you go by the Clemson/Georgia/etc. folks who think we are just good while Spurrier is at the wheel... We'll probably just fold up our Football program and pick up another women's sport like basketball or something.

I'm guessing Ward already has complete control of the defense since Spurrier probably spends most of his time with the offense since he is the OC. USCe might as well give him a shot, since you're probably right with the fact that USCe probably doesn't have the "power" to steal a truly proven HC from another good team.

I think we have some pretty good choices from in staff.

Ward has a great defensive mind and it would be great if his sustained presence could keep bringing in top defensive recruits.

On the offensive side we have Mangus who is another solid recruit and coordinator for our offense.

And I like the idea of having someone in house who knows what it takes to recruit and win here. Even Spurrier has admitted that he underestimated that task when he first came here.

Yet!!... No, probably not.

But, what about this scenario? Spurrier coaches for three/four more seasons. In that time Chip Kelly does his all to make his system work in the NFL, but it's just not going like he/his bosses would like. He's now looking for a head coaching position back in the college game at just the right time one opens up in Columbia. He keeps Ward on as DC/AHC. Match. Made. In... Unh... Heaven!!
