Last year the clear cut 1 and 2 were LSU/Bama, in whatever order you like, not going to fight about it. Georgia is the only real team with the talent to contend for best in the conference, with USCe deserving a mention as well.
Both Bama and LSU lost some key players, with Alabama losing more players and LSU losing the best player on either of the defenses(claibourne). I don't think losing brockers will hurt LSU much, but losing Ron Brooks hurts quite a bit.
The way I see it, if LSU's third DB is able to play well and Simon plays like he has so far, LSU should be #1.
If the #3 CB isn't good enough for Mathieu to play nickel, it's going to come down to Bama/UGA, and I think I would give Bama a slight edge in that case, but Georgia would probably be #2 if Mathieu can't play nickel.

Bama had the best defense in the last 25 years of college football. No shame in being second best to that.

I think they'll lose @ Mizzou because of that.

1a. Bama
1b. LSU
2. UGA
3. UF
Choosing between Bama and LSU is damn near impossible bc the style of play is so different.
Bama will be the toughest D to move the ball against (once again). Even though they lose significant pieces they will reload and on paper be the best D in the conference and the nation. On the flip side LSU will also reload and still have the best playmaker on Defense since Charles Woodson and while LSU will give up more yards they will create more turnovers and big plays. It's six of one half a dozen of the other. LSU will give up more yards but create more turnovers while Bama dominates by holding offenses to punts more often than not.
And this is not necessarily related but LSU may very well have the best special teams unit in the nation, which gives us the edge on defense.
Also, the gap between Bama/LSU and UGA is fairly significant. While the Dawgs will have a very good D they will not be on the Bama/LSU level.

Statistically I think LSU. I think the D may be as good, or better than the one last year. The two big differences is not facing strong OOC offenses (Oregon and WVU). Keith Price (UW) may be the best QB LSU faces but I don't think they have the horses to compete this year. The second difference is a probable better O that will allow the D more time off the field. And allowing them to gamble more, which will benefit this type D I think.

UF will have an excellent defense, but I don't see it being best in the SEC.

Yeah...Todd Grantham isn't a quality coach.

This will be huge for LSU, especially against Bama. LSU at Tiger Stadium is gonna be a man-sized task for everyone. (Although, I do think HB7's impact is being massively overstated.)

Tough to decide between Bama and LSU, I have to give the edge to LSU just because of the first 4 ball games. Three of them are highschool teams I think. UGA has cupcake season also and witl be there becasue of that. With that said
1)LSU
1a)Bama
2)UGA
3)SC
4)UF
aTm and Mizz not included because I don't know enought about them yet.
P.S. After our schedule last year (toughest ever) we deserve a break.
