I'm just not convinced aTm is capable of this. Moreso than like an Arkansas which is just a hilarious notion but still questionable.

Why not?

Their next hire will be huge. Right now they can still turn things around pretty easily. But if they go through an extended downturn at this specific moment in history it could really hurt their program long term for the reasons you mentioned.
It happened in the 80s and 90s, and it can happen again. They can't blame it on A&M either if it does, only themselves. Too bad there won't be a game for bragging rights.
Oh well, playing LSU on Thanksgiving is a perfect tradeoff for me!

What about LSU's Super Bowl with Arky?

I should've put "potentially playing LSU on Thanksgiving". But we all know it's in the works.

I don't fault you for believing that, Draconian Sanctions. There's little reason you should think otherwise. Texas A&M University/College has historically been its own worst enemy. For decades, a large percentage of the maroon & white contingency couldn't care less about self-promotion, facilities, marketing, hiring staff from outside of the Aggie Network, etc. The Wally Groff AD years epitomized that. In a nutshell, most Ags not only didn't care what others thought of A&M, they didn't want a national (or even regional) rep. There was a a fear that "carpetbaggers" would change what the university was.
In the early 90s, the powers that be at A&M--along with a very new and young base of Former Students--made the conscious decision to change that. Dont get me wrong: We always believed strongly in who we were/are & for what we stood; but the university did a lousy, lousy job of sharing that with the "outside world." To a very large extent, our former university president, Dr. Robert Gates, changed that.
I'll shut up. I realize most on here are annoyed by my monologue ;). But we are capable. We have every resource we need--monetarily and otherwise--to become a more nationally-recognized brand. Will it happen? Remains to be seen. But the amount of money & effort that has gone into marketing & communications at TAMU over the past decade is sick. Just because we haven't done "it" in the past, doesn't mean times havent changed.

To look at it from a completely unscientific, but logical standpoint:
Stubhub -- lowest 2013 season ticket resale price:
Texas -- $586
Texas A&M -- $999
Stubhub -- lowest price for 'biggest' home game
Texas (vs Tech) -- $117
Texas A&M (vs 'Bama) -- $375
So looking at the current market forces, would have to say A&M is at least the much more sought-after ticket. Add in the recent recruiting class outcome, and there's no real question as to where the programs stack up right now.
A&M's looking much more '85-'95 than '96-'06.

Texas historically owns the state--but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that A&M is poised to take over VERY quickly.
2013 & 2014 seasons will determine much.

An interesting metric, FrankWhite'56. I was curious and looked up highest Stubhub prices for the home games of the respective schools as well.
Texas A&M (v Bama) = $4,980.00 USD
Texas (v KSU) = $648.00 USD
Certainly the opponents are variables to be considered as well; but supply/demand speaks for itself.

It doesn't really matter what A&M does, UT will always be the premier university in the state.

I don't understand why anybody would think this is an important question. Texas is plenty big enough for both schools and several more. I've never felt like UT "owns" Texas any more than I feel like A&M owns Texas now. With the OP being an MSU fan the question is understandable: Mississippi really isn't big enough for MSU, Ole Miss, and USM to all be good or even mediocre. There just aren't enough people.
It has been mentioned before, and I agree that A&M's move to the SEC ultimately hurts OU more than anybody. Which is good.
To me a much better question is which team owns the other. Here's hoping Mack stays around for 10 more years and Ole Miss beats the hell out of UT at Austin.

Neither school owns the State of Texas.

Screw that. You take Ole Miss. We want LSU for Thanksgiving.

UT always has and always will 'own' the state of Texas. That's why aTm HAD to finally get out of the Big 12 and come to the SEC.

Doesn't he have a pretty good record against A&M?
