Starkville with 60k more people. I've been to both. Congrats.
..and Atlanta is Tuscaloosa with a couple million more people. It's the people that make the difference.

Smart just turned down the UCLA job. People really think he's going to Alabama?? Makes no sense.

Big name coaches also usually want to know who their bosses are going to be. Alabama has an interim schol president and an 80 year old athletic director. That kind of uncertainty usually doesn't bode well for hiring big name coaches

I actually like Starkville's size. Atlanta and Tuscaloosa are a whole lot more dissimilar than just population. Starkville, not so much.

Yeah, he's the best they've had since Wooden all right.

The similarities between Starkville and Tuscaloosa are few.

I've lived in both cities.

Can you explain that? Granted you have more restaurants and bars.

I hate to admit it but you have a rational legitimate point there. The AD who is in his early to mid 70s btw is on his way out and there isn't currently a president. I'm not sure why we seem to be putting all our eggs in the Marshall and Smart bag. Those two are tough pulls given who they have turned down recently. We should have taken a chance on Howland. Having said all that, I don't see the need to rush the new hire. Make both those candidates say no and then move on to the next tier. Alabama has proven in the past that they can be a regular NCAA tournament participant without a big name coach.

There are a lot of factors involved other than just population numbers, IMO.

Starkville is just a small college town located on HWY 82 with a college town population, much more similar to Auburn, IMO.

Tuscaloosa is roughly 3x larger and has a lot of diversity due to various industries in the area and its proximity to Birmingham. Located on the Black Warrior River, with a decent sized Lake that's a part of it. And, as you mentioned, many more restaurants, bars, etc...

I do miss Stromboli's though

Well that's true, but there is a lot of industry just east of Starkville that most people don't realize exists. Plus you can actually fly on a commercial airline in and out of the area. That's a difference maker between us, Tuscaloosa, Oxford, and Auburn.

I heard the BOL writers seem to think there's actually smoke to Marshall going to Alabama. I'd shite a brick if Bama pulled off that coup

It's certainly possible. It would break the hearts of Shocker fans though, I used to know an alum.

I agree with you. I seriously don't know why they didn't try to get Howland, (If they didn't.). I think that would have been a great hire for UA. Marshall would be a good hire as well. I am not very impressed with Smart. To me, he seems like Grant 2.0. He gets to the tourney, but has been an early exit the last 4 years.
I don't think UA needs a big name coach to be successful. I think they have a good set up and fan base. (AU needed someone like Pearl who could totally change the culture.) The culture is there for UA. They just need a good coach to come in and be successful. I hope they get a good one. It makes the SEC and the State better to have all the major programs doing well.

Someone needs to grab Bobby Hurley

Why? Has he shown a track record of being a good coach? I admit I am not familiar with his record, but wasn't this his first year to make the tourney? I would think a big school in the Power 5 conferences would want a proven track record, i.e. Howland, Pearl, etc.
