No division title, in a division that includes the 2 most powerful programs in college football right now? That's how you measure success? I guess there's about 120 overrated coaches out there, huh?

Give Petrino 10 years and he'll get his SEC West title. Fortunately, in the years he DOESN'T win the title, he's at least getting arkansas 9'ish wins or more.

I am not saying that Petrino is overrated. But claiming that he is underrated is a bit extreme. Every Hog game I watch, I hear the announcers call him an offensive genius and compare his offense with the Fun n' Gun.

Bear Bryant at least managed to get a Heisman winner when he was in the SWC. He drastically declined when he left Aggieland.

So you're saying the best coach of all time at his absolute best couldn't win more than an SWC title at A&M?

....and to the OP, the answer is Mike Archer, hands down. I think most would agree.

He's very rarely given any media attention despite making Arkansas into a very competitive program in the toughest division of college football. He's doing more at Arkansas than anyone else is doing at a school without built in recruiting territories. I think that part of his coaching resume is overlooked.

Meyer.

Because during his entire career in major college football he has relied more on Mullen, and the already in place defensive staff. Look at what happen when both Mullen and Strong left. Ohio State will be the first staff that he has built from the ground up. And I have a feeling he's going to "Hoke" down the stretch.

No ifs, ands, or butts...it's Nutt.

This.

Nutt was a perfect storm. The only reason he lasted 10 years at Arky was bc of his booster connections and the fact that his Uncle Franky was the AD.Any other school where he didnt have said connections would have canned his mediocre arse after 4-5 seasons, tops.

Then, we were in such a mess that we were happy to have someone of his "experience" when Orgeron left him with a load of NFL talent. (I'm biting a nail in half by the way)

I am honestly just happy we got rid of him after 4. It kills me to realize that if we had had a legit coach in 2008 and 2009 we couldve been in the mix for BCS at-large bids or better.

Anyway, frick that dude and I offer my most sincere apologies to the Arky fans whom I didnt believe.

the only way to be overrated is for some people to think you were great....

under those circumstances the only answer to the OP's original question is one Vince Dooley

Except he wasn't the best coach of all time. Jimmy Johnson, Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll and Bill Belichick off the top of my head were all better.

Perhaps they are tired of rivals downplaying our legitimate titles, so they are counting all of the ones that some selector or other voted for Alabama for that year. Here's a link......

Since I've always liked Ole Miss, it was "a really tough pill to swallow" when he was hired. But quite frankly, I thought he would be somewhat more successful at Ole Miss and it might take a while before the real shite began to manifest. But then again, I was thinking about what I would do (or what most people would do in a similar situation) had I been given another chance like he was handed with the job at Ole Miss.

But hell no...I was only kidding myself. I began to see hints as early as when Kent Austin left. All the little "crises", one after another, began to appear. There's no telling what a really good coach could have done with the talent he inherited. Same goes for his first 2 years with us.

Anyway, I do hope the Rebs have some good years ahead. I think they will.
