The 1938 and 1939 Tennessee Volunteers

1938

1939

Gave up a total of 30 points in two years. 14 of which were in the '39 Rose Bowl.

Held opponents scoreless for 15 games in a row.

Untouchable.

Don't leave out 1940. They again went undefeated in the regular season, giving up 26 points in 10 games.

2004 Auburn needed a retry extra point to beat LSU

I still cannot believe that happened.

It's hard for me to call some team from 70 years ago the greatest SEC team of all time when the teams today would completely annihilate those teams from the past.

Like I said......We are talking about them relative to the other teams they were playing against in their respective eras

If we are talking about greatest SEC teams relative to their time then I can accept some of these posters talking about teams from the last century.

If we are simply talking about best SEC team ever, it has to come from the last decade. There is no way teams from 20 years ago or more could beat the teams of today. My vote is last years Alabama team

You don't say.

I'm fairly confident that nobody listing teams from the 30s-70s thinks those teams could be competitive today. The question has to be how much better was [insert team] relative to their competition.

I still Say the Sewanee Iron Men and their Roadtrip in 1899 from a historical stand point has to be the greatest SEC football team of all time. What those guys did in those 6 days on the road, beating 5 guys, all traveling by train... They had to have been dog tired. I would bet that any team of today's generation rolling 5 games into 6 days while traveling the entire day and night just to get to the next point would be lucky to come out unscathed. Well not only unscathed, but unscored upon.

It seemed like the OP was posing a "who would beat who" scenario, pitting Auburn '04 against Bama '09. I was just following along with that line of thought.
