People will bitch hysterically every year, the #5/#6 teams will moan and complain, and nobody will care.
The fans of the teams on the bubble always bitch.
You have teams like 20-18 in basketball that get mad they don't get into the tournament. You f'ing lost 48% of the games you played and you think you belong in the playoffs? Gimmie a break.
If you can't finish in the top 4 after the regular season and conference championships, you aren't the best team in the country, period.
Find me a single year where you think the best team in the country finished the regular season #5 or greater.
You freaking won't be able to. You can find years where you can make the case for 2, or even 3, and maybe once in awhile 4.
But beyond that forget about it.
A playoff spot needs to be something that matters and is difficult to earn, not given out like particpation trophies at little league to placate fans of inferior teams.

Ole Miss. The first expansion gone wrong. damn 1920s...what were the southern powers expecting? Something good to come from Mississippi?

Lighten up, Homer. A 64-team playoff is Ole Miss's best opportunity to win a national championship.

I like 8. SEC, ACC, B1G, PAC 12, Big 12 and The highest ranked between the MWC, AAC, MAC, and CUSA champs. Then the top two BCS ranked at large teams.
Then seed them according to BCS ranking.
That leaves no need for a selection committee, and keeps the regular season still worth something. If you want in the playoff, you sure as hell win your conference, or be the very best of non-conference champs.
ETA: Also, frick independents. Either play a real schedule or you'll be sorry. Better hope you finish in the top 5.

4 is much better than 2. teams like Missouri and Auburn would be very much in the conversation. Win out and we would be in. As it is, win out and we are in the Sugar Bowl.
If we go to 8, the games need to be played on campus.

Oh I completely agree step in the right direction.
I just hope it expands beyond 4. It should.

Top 6 imo

4 v 5
This would work
Giving those byes rewards great regular seasons

I'd be cool with that.

It'll be just like the NCAA Bball tourney. Start with a few teams and grow and grow to encompass more teams.

This may be a bit homerish, but I believe the 2010 Bama team that spanked Michigan State in the Capital One bowl played like the number one team that day and could have won a playoff. They wouldn't have deserved to be there though, 4 is as big as the playoff should get.

I agree. 6-8 is perfect. Who cares if there are two loss teams? They might have just lost one in the regular season and slipped up in their conference championship. Who knows. Anybody can beat anybody, which is what makes it fun. If #15 teams in baskwtball can beat the #2 I garuntee you that some #8, #7,#6 could knock off #1 and #2

I honestly could care less. SEC football could never win another title even if it were handed to them. FSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUu

Is 4 teams enough or just right?
8 teams would be perfect.
I hate that a possible 2 loss AU team would have to settle for a UCF Sugar Bowl than at least try to get into the playoffs and go from there.
