He'll have them in a much better position in 2-3 years. It's not an overnight fix but his defensive scheme requires a lot of athletes and a lot of learning

I ended this discussion on Chief's impact for A&M. I wanted to know what LSU was going to do about the actual problem with them.

ETA Your O made Ellis Johnson look like a freakin' genius.

There are plenty of good to great defenses that have two and three star talent. We have mostly four and some five star talent.

This argument is nonsense.
not when you consider the talent required to run chavis's defensive schemes. When he lost a few junior defensive players in 2012 it lead to a defense bad enough to cost us a NC run in 2013. Insert more athletes and experience, #1 defense in 2014

A lot of LSU tears in this thread. I guess they feel bad for losing the only thing keeping their team from dead last this year.

Welp

Sounds like you have a S&C problem.

He fixed LSU's defense by year 2. We were terrible in 2008, back to good by 2010.

Aggies are perpetuate under achievers. They think throwing money is the answer.

Chavis makes them better, but still probably bottom half of the SEC next year. A&M needs talent on the defensive side of the ball, and Chavis is not very productive on the recruiting trail. Hopefully A&M isn't expecting 2011 LSU defense, because with the offense they run that is next to impossible.

There is going to be a give and take with the offense they run, so I don't know that he ever produces and elite defense there, but A&M will be improved if they have even a halfway decent defense.

Here is the catch: Chavis's defenses were most valuable against spread offenses and mobile qbs. While still productive against prostyle offenses, chavis was most valuable for his ability to stop the exact type of offense A&M runs. Problem is, that offense is run by only 3 of A&Ms opponents in the west.

Yes. It is a 2-3 year project, as many have said. But you will start to see a different kind of athlete on their defense. They will be longer, faster, more aggressive. That won't happen overnight, but it will happen because Chavis knows what kind of players he wants and he knows how to get them.

He's got two years of recruiting ahead of him before he can start to develop the kind of D & athletes he wants/needs. aTm is very shallow on D talent right now but give him some time, he'll make improvements.

LSU had talent on Defense all over the field. A&M has a DE.

Good luck

These guys from our 2014 class were fish this year.

Garrett: 5* stud DE
Qualen Cunningham: 4* DE
Otaro Alaka: 4* LB
Nick Harvey: 4* DB
Deshawn Washington: 4* DT
Zaycoven Henderson: 4* DT
Armani Watts: 4* DB
Josh Walker: 3* LB who played well

The class from the previous year is similar, though several of our best players dropped out after helping A&M chase the Fulmer Cup.

He isn't walking into an embarrassment of riches by any means, but he's got some talent to work with.

tbh Chavis is on the downside of his career. He peaked in 2011.

#11 pts/game in 2012
#30 pts/game in 2013

Yeah, that's not much of an improvement over #71 in 2014 or #91 in 2013. A&M is doomed.

maybe but I don't think a&m has a defensive mindset in the program

Yeah, that's probably why they hired a crappy, though best, DC in the country. Because they don't care about defense.

Your O won't allow a D to put up those kind of numbers. Plus, Chavis is not gonna bring all those players with him.

Historically, A&M has been a defensive powerhouse.
The anemic version of defense you've seen as of late is a relatively new phenomenon in Aggieland for those of us who aren't 20-30 years old.
With the right kids in place, there's no reason at all Chavis shouldn't find success at A&M.

That will be one pissed off fanbase if they end up getting Fran'd on this deal.

Well played.

Despite appearances Ags already have some stud defensive players. They weren't obvious because they didn't know what to do. Personally I thought Garrett had a great year despite his coaching, not because of it. And we have some game-changers coming in next year. I don't expect them to immediately be a top 10 defense, but top 30 or even 50 would be a remarkable improvement. LSU fans are understandably waffling on Chavis, but the plain fact is a not-very-good LSU team finished #3 in the country in scoring defense this year. Make fun of Ags all you want, but running down Chavis just makes LSU fans look stupid.
