2000 - Oklahoma vs. Washington

It always makes me laugh a little to hear Miami people say they deserved that bid over FSU for the exact same reason Washington deserved it over them

8-1-1, ranked #16 in the final AP poll. Not even the outright SEC champ. And your loss was a shutout by Duquesne

Sorry, I don't think so.

I would have picked the 1940 MSU team at 10-0-1.

They actually had something going until the start of WWII.

But Deere Lowered, that was a looooong time ago. At this point, I don't know if you can truly say anyone was a National Champion until after the mid 50's or early 60's.

But Bammers have to have something to count by.

I mean Miami did defeat the #1 and #2 ranked teams that season and were ranked #2 at season's end prior to the bowl games

How are they not at least conference co-champs?

Sounds like they should have taken the BS approach Bama took back then and scheduled 7 conference games when everybody else was playing 5.

Yep. Bama should have dropped Tennessee and MSU and replaced them withpowerhouses like Marion Military Institute and Carlisle.

That was a common theme for the SEC for years. A good example is 1950.

Kentucky won the SEC title with a 5-1 record. Tennessee went 4-1.

UK fans claim a national title for an 11-1 season which included a win over AP/UPI champion Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. UK lost their final regular season game to Tennessee.

Tennessee also claims the 1950 title because they did win over UK. They lost early in the season. They won the Cotton Bowl over Texas.

Tennessee finished higher in the polls to Kentucky. UK has the SEC title because of 1 more conference win, but Tennessee has more of a claim to the national title because of head-to-head, higher Poll finish, and having more selectors favoring them.

Not a perfect season actually. The tie knocks that out

Oregon over Washington is moot. Washington defeated Miami, thus capturing Miami's quality wins further helping UW's case. Only reason why Miami had a shot at a split title had FSU won is based on Miami's H2H over FSU, and Miami losing to Washington early compared to UW losing later to Oregon.

'59 OM had some crazy good defensive stat, didn't they? Points allowed or something else?

Miami defeated #1 FSU and #2 VT capturing their quality wins as well combined helping Miami's case next to finishing the regular season ranked #2, so what's your point? I'm aware they lost to UW and finishing undefeated could've bolstered their case to play OU but that's how the BCS determined the matchup.

Oregon was 9-2 going into that postseason. They're irrelevant to this discussion.

Washington, Oregon State, Miami and FSU were all 10-1 going into that postseason. Washington beat Oregon State and Miami. Miami beat FSU. Washington deserved that bid.
