I'm not taking that bait . I just know our program is almost always been top 6 nationally with A&M being number one

Either way, last I checked of all the schools in the SEC that offer petroleum engineering, LSU is usually ranked dead last among those schools.

Compared to your state legislature. I'm assuming the students you know are a bit more informed on the subject compared to the old blue-hairs in the state government, and thus want to end prohibition.

The only thing Mississippi State has going for them is baseball.

They're close to the bottom in football
Close to the bottom in basketball (men and women)
THE bottom in academics

Not entirely true. Yes we have sucked at football but we have improved in that sport a lot recently with 4 straight bowl appearances. Plus we did win the West in 98, something OM has never done (and Vandy and UK haven't won the East).

MSU was usually top half in the conference in basketball until last year, with us rebuilding under a new coach.

Overall in sports, we've had more accomplishments in the modern era than Ole Miss has in the SEC. Vandy as well.

We have like 450+ Amendments to our Constitution. We aren't crazy we are just thorough.

There is a copy of the Texas constitution in every Whataburger bathroom.

A lot of our students leave the state because employment opportunities are scarce here especially in a majority of fields that Ole Miss specializes. Also the conservative attitude is firmly entrenched within my parents and grandparents age group and they are the only ones who vote consistently.

That is disappoint. The south has so much potential, but constantly holds itself back.

One state senator tried to force Ole Miss to change back to col reb as a mascot. He was a state fan. I'm not making that up that's seriously what they debated in the Mississippi senate.

I remember when one OM grad State legislator tried to make the MSU mascot a cow.

Then when Rep. Steve Holland tried to change the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America Course this is the guy who is famous for his comment on his opponents poor performance in the election..Holland was quoted "I could go to the steps of the Lee County courthouse and screw a bull moose and still get more than 5% of the vote"

Then of course we finally amended our state constitution a couple years ago to ban slavery.

Yes it is. I try to frame the conversation through the prism of new tax revenue streams that relieve the burden placed on tax payers through our income tax and they are generally more receptive but the over-arching stereotypes of stoners wins out at the end of the day. In 12 years when I'm 40 I bet we(meaning our generation) might be able to move the needle some.

Just like the over-arching stereotype of the drunken dead-beat caused the sale and consumption of alcohol to be banned for nearly a decade. To prohibitionists, there is no such thing as responsible alcohol/cannabis use. There is only abuse, and those sinners must be punished.

What's wrong with conservative positions? They are generally good for the economy/jobs. Mississippi is actually doing much better economically and we have for the first time in history both Republican majorities in the state houses, and a R governor.

It wasn't but a few years ago the state legislatures were democrat and have been for decades.

And a vast majority of the young populace in MS is just as conservative as the older generations.

ETA I'm just talking about conservative economic stances. As far as social issues such as pot legalization, the south is definitely far behind. I wish we could take conservative fiscal policies and combine that with more liberal social policies and you'd have real freedom and a booming economic engine.
