Now Bama fans have no option but to defend Lane friggin Kiffin. I never thought I'd see the day.
I'm not defending him, I just want to know why Steve Sarkisian is considered the superior coordinator when they had the same amount of time at the position (two years). Not only that, but Kiffin has the slightly better head coaching record.

Until he gets fired as a NFL OC, we can only speculate that he will be a total bust since he has been fired as a NFL HC.
So bust.

Good job.

Not only that, but Kiffin has the slightly better head coaching record.
Did you look at the situation Sarkisian walked into at Washington? That was a program that didn't have a winning record in 6 years. They won ZERO games the year before he was hired. The average score in those 12 games was 13 to 39. Washington didn't have a winning conference record since 2001. He posted a winning conference record every year except his first.
Kiffin walked into UT who won the SECE just 2 years earlier. Walked into USC, who was still one of the most talented teams in the country. He had the #1 player in the country as a starting QB.
I'm not sure how you even think that is comparable on any level.

Lane Kiffin looks like Daniel Tosh

He did a great job cleaning up Tyrone Willingham's mess but he never truly rebuilt them. Washington won a national championship in 1991 and almost competed for one in 2000. There's a recent history of success there and, despite Sarkisian's best efforts, he couldn't quite get Washington over that hump.
All of this is well and good, but it doesn't answer the question at hand: why is Sarkisian considered the better coordinator?

Because he doesn't coach at Alabama and Kiff does.

I would rank him most likely to get a better "next job" than any other OC.

Steve Spurrier (S. Carolina)
Gus Malzahn (Auburn)
Kevin Sumlin (Texas a&m)
Cam Cameron (LSU)
Mike Bobo (UGA)
Lane Kiffin (Bama)
Dan Mullen (Miss St.)- Frustrating at times. Not all bad.
Josh Henson (Mizzou)- His playcalling annoyed me at times when I watched Mizzou. Not all bad though.
Jim Chaney (Arky)- Had nothing to work with last season.
Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss)- Don't remember liking or disliking his playcalling.
Mike Bajakian (Tenn.)- Don't remember liking or disliking.
Neal Brown (Kentucky)- Didn't watch them enough.
?:
Kurt Roper (Florida)
Karl Dorrell (Vandy)

When Kiffin was just a coordinator he was one of the best play callers in college football.
Not according to the numbers he wasn't, especially running the ball.

why is Sarkisian considered the better coordinator?
Because of the complete lack of success Kiffin has had without him. Meanwhile, Sark has been successful without Kiffin.

I'd rank him 16th, behind every current OC plus Gary Crowton and Greg Studrawa.

I wouldn't expect a whole lot from him. Chaney's offense was more potent than Kiffin's. And his offense at USC was plain terrible.
He's probably not bad but there's no reason to think he's any better at being and OC than a HC.

Some? Off the top of my head, maybe two that wouldn't be at the bottom of the SEC in '05.
Back to the OP...I'm sure he'll do fine as an OC, just not sure if the Tide actually upgraded here or not.

2009 Tenn scored just as many touchdowns as Meyer's UF and 1 less than Bama in conference play while playing 1 less game, nobody mentions this but points to his failures at HC with USC as to why he won't be a successful OC. When he was a OC at USC and had a extremely good offense, he had nothing to do with it
Not going to pretend I was really thrilled about the hire or he's one of the best in the conference, but it's hilarious how he gets zero credit for anything good but takes 100% blame for the bad
Don't blame you guys though, if was hired at any of yall's schools I wouldn't say anything good about him either

he should be great for LSU

Hard to rank Kiffin among SEC OC's because he hasn't completed a season in the SEC yet. He has the credentials and isn't as bad a coach as most on here think. He will probably be middle of the road, which is enough for a team like Bama most games. I just can't see him and Saban on the same field in the same logo Polo shirt

Kiffin was HC, not OC though. In '05, he was OC at USC.
