We are an Aggie family. I went there and met my wife there, Dad went there, it's always been our school. My Mom and her family are from South Carolina (she was a nurse and went to the Med College in SC, have USC, Clemson, and Citadel folks in the family).

My eldest is a rising senior. He's a very good student but not exceptional (Mostly A's with the occassional B, has done 3 Dual Credit classes with a community college and got A's). Decent SAT but not great, he's trying to improve his score. Goes to a highly competitive HS in Texas and his class rank is not great and unfortunately A&M puts a HUGE emphasis on class rank in admissions without caring much about the quality of the school. So he is looking at other options.

He's a good kid. Respectful and well mannered. Plays football (not getting a scholarship :)). Got a job right after he turned 16. Loves the outdoors and is on the HS fishing team and loves to hunt, really loves the ocean. He is looking at working in Ag Business or potentially in Maritime, he wants to work outside. He is taking welding and had a boating license before he had a driver's license, loves to work with his hands and isn't afraid of work. He is looking at A&M Galveston as well and potentially doing Marine Transportation or Marine Business.

He gets lots of mailings from SEC schools (LSU, Arkansas, Miss State, Bama, UK, UT, etc.) Lots of kids from his school go OOS because of the same issue he is encountering class rank wise. I have limited true knowledge of the different SEC schools academically. I just want what is best for him and for him to be happy and get a degree that will let him build a career and get off my payroll.

If he were to look at a couple of SEC schools, which ones fit him best?

Visit the ones you are interested in and talk to admissions. Before you go see if they offer what he is interested in.

Do NOT let your allegiance to one athletic program or hatred of another limit you. I had a niece graduate from Auburn, but she is still an Alabama fan through and through (graduated Vet school)

Just for an example, lots of students from Georgia go to Ole Miss

Sounds like Galveston would be the best choice. Can also transfer to CS pretty easy if he keeps a 3.0

If he's wanting to work on the water, wouldn't Florida probably make the most sense of all the SEC schools? I'd assume they have more martime curriculum work than any other SEC school but I honestly have no idea. I know LSU has a program for that but know nothing about it. LINK

If he knows what he wants to do with his life, I'd encourage him to find the college, SEC or not, that best fits him reaching those goals. I wouldn't worry too much about who he grew up rooting for in sports or where the rest of the family went. He can still do that.

If he posts like his dad, he should go to the school that gives him a scholarship in their creative writing department.

Marine is typically UF. Unfortunately, despite the stereotype, big SEC schools are really competitive and hard to get into for a HS senior. Going community college is a quicker route to gain admission to a larger school.

Coming to the rant to ask for advice on where to send your kids to school?

I'm pretty sure many of the people posting here are still in grade school, or at least act like it.

Booger face.

In all seriousness, it sounds as if he'd enjoy the University of New England.

I wish the kid the best of luck in whatever adventures his adulthood brings him and I see his dad and him are smarter than you are. If aTm is going to be a stretch for him then Florida is way out of reach for him. Yes, you have no idea while the state of Florida is surrounded by water UF is about as far as you can get away from the water in the state.

Now to the Dad if he wants to work in maritime look at LINK / I have two friends that are very well off now in their 40/50 after going there. Both spent most of their lives on the water. One at 53 owns a fleet of fishing chaters here in Florida and in Coasta Rica.

UGA has a good agribusiness school. Competitive admissions. Plenty of good hunting and fishing close by. Athens is consistently ranked the best college town in the US and is situated between lakes Lanier and Hartwell.

Take him to a few and let him visit over the summer. After that let him follow his gut is what I would do

As TideFan said, do not let SEC rivalries/feelings about other SEC schools factor in.

If he is interested in Ag Business, I would suggest a land grant school because their Ag programs are typically top notch programs. A&M, Miss State, Auburn are all land grants. LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, and UGA are as well, but they were established before the Morill Act.

Also look into sea grant schools (A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, MSU, Auburn, Bama, UGA, Florida) for the Maritime piece. NOAA coordinates the sea grant program "to enhance the practical use and conservation of coastal, marine and Great Lakes resources in order to create a sustainable economy and environment."

Where does he want to go?

Outside of Vandy, none carry a lot of overall academic prestige. None of that is to say that there aren't top notch colleges and world class education and networking opportunities within many of the SEC Universities, so don't be dissuaded by unfounded southern school stereotypes. There are great educational opportunities and College experiences across the SEC. But, it really goes down to where he feels comfortable and what can be afforded.

My daughter was dead set on Alabama and nursing until her senior year after we did an extended college tour. She decided she was no longer interested in nursing and is too pragmatic to not pursue a professional degree with a purpose.

She is now waiving off of college and entering an electrician apprenticeship.

You can't really go wrong with any SEC schools in my opinion. UF and Vandy would be the hardest to get into out of state though.

I didn't say Florida was on the water smart arse. I said they probably have more maritime programs available at the University than other SEC schools. Upon a cursory search, it appears Florida has a major in Maritime Sciences in the Ag school, Marine Sciences in the college of arts and sciences, a Coastal and Oceonagraphic Engineering program. He specifically asked about SEC schools with programs like that. None of the SEC schools are any closer to the water than Florida is. The next closest would be LSU, which is why I mentioned those two schools

Visit several. See which one suits him and his major best.
